I have two nearly identical systems (two compaqs, this was 2 years ago dont ask) if i were to open up one and remove the memory from one and install it in the other, would the system with the incoming memory automatically recognize it or will i have to do some hardcore geek BIOS stuff?

No geek bios stuff the memory should be automatically recognized. Some motherboards have a memory limit or need their memory installed in pairs, just something to be aware of.
