    "firmware" is the internal software to a device that runs the device. Your device (such as your dvd or cd burner) came with factory firmware installed.

    upgrading your firmware can add improved features... but done improperly, you can render your device useless.

    if your device is working properly, I personally wouldn't jack around with the firmware. (I've had drives destroyed by firmware installation routines that didn't go right).
