Grrrr
This is a difficult one. I understand the biz about pixels, bitrate blah blah.
What I'm looking for is a quality XVCD with a fairly high bitrate, say, 2000. That in terms of size is somewhere in between the rather small 352 x 288 and the, maybe too large, 720 x 576
I've already tried working out the mean between the 2 axis, but the mpeg turned out in one corner of the screen. I used TMPGENC. So, you obviously have to use a, for want of a better expression, valid ratio. What might that be?
PS I like these ratios as they are a nice size for widescreen movies - don't fancy the 480 x 480 much

For MPEG encoding resolution (352x288/352x576/480x576/720x576) and aspect ratios (4:3/16:9) are different settings. I am very happy with 480x576 / 4:3 XVCD. Usually the image will be displayed on TV as full screen, no matter which horizontal resolution you chose.

Okay I'm going to have to make myself look stupid here.
A widescreen 16:9 movie is basically a kind of flatish rectangle. Now what I don't understand is coding at 352x576 or 480x576? That constitutes a 'squarer' kind of shape, so, doesn't that mean that you are simply allocating more space to code above the movie if you like - the black bits?
I would have thought that 536x432 would be a better option for widescreen.
I know what I am suggesting is profoundly wrong in some sense but I really can't put my finger on it. Please explain someone and put an old dog out of its miser.

well, for some reason vertical resolution is more important in ascertaining deatil than horizontal. hence the perfectly acceptable picture of 480X576 SVCD. now, if a film is letterboxed, you're right in that higher vertical resaolution is given to black bars. but if you think about it, it also gives higher resolution to the film in the middle of the black bars. see?

352 x 480, 352 x 576, 480 x 480 and 480 x 576 resolutions are all supported by my DVD player / PAL TV.
I typically only use xSVCD, but my player (SAST 803) also supports MPEG1 at these resolutions.
The key point to remember is to set (in TMPGEnc settings / advanced) the Video Arrange Method to Full Screen - (Keep aspect ratio 2).
This ensure that no matter what res you encode with, it will still appear at the right aspect on the TV.

jr
