    Pardon my ignorance but if I start off with an MPEG1, is there much sense in converting it to an MPEG2 (if possible) and then to an SVCD...or is it adviseable to just stick with the MPEG1 and VCD scenario???

    It's never a good idea to re-encode. If it was originally VCD leave it that way.
