What a waste, you don't get my point or what ?!?
...only lamers start throwing around with the dictionary, when they have nothing else to add to a discussion.

    tompika,

First of all it ain't "Johnny" and YES I'm talking about you!
...and I was refering to your waste-of-server-space reply, not what damn drive you might be having. That part starts in a new sentence a clearly says '...some people...'

It takes 2 parties to have a war and I have never stated that one was better than the other, so if there is a war; it must because others wants the war, not me.
...but don't worry; after my dear neighbor comes over for BBQ this weekend and I get more background from him on why he thinks this will be the case, I won't share it with this hostile forum (or at least some of it's members) but rather keep it to myself. Then you can be left to debate various PR statements and believe them if you want, rather than taking a little interest in someone who knows the business and are not limited by what the PR people allows him to say.

Don't even have a DVD writer of any sort myself yet, just thought I would pass on some insider information from my neighbor. You can take this information in any way you like, but that is what he told me (over a few beers).

Right, and if your buddy was from Microsoft, he would be telling your that Internet Explorer is the number one browser and that WMV9 is the best and will replace all other formats next year.

I won't shoot the messenger, I will just help him wake up and smell the coffee....

    willy_annand,

Try and go to the TEAC website and look under DVD Writers
    http://www.teac.com/DSPD/DVD.html
...do you see any DVD+R/W ?!?

So why would he say that ???
...and he still didn't say that one was better than the other, so go to the kitchen and brew a fresh cup of coffee yourself; cause the aroma on that one seems to be gone.

Who out there remembers all those people that used to come to this forum and swear up and down that they can burn a DVD on a CD with a firmware change?

    They never really left...

Now they argue about which DVD format is better! :P

Rather than continue to argue here, let's all go out and buy fireworks and blow something up. I've got mine. How about you?

Homer Simpson: " There's no better way to celebrate America than by blowing up a small piece of it"... or something like that. Come'on, you've only got a few hours left.

Quit staring at this thing. I don't even like maroon.

Who Gives a sh*t, as long as i can get my media i dont care who wins. If jbrondum had a girlfriend and a social life he wouldn't be listening to bullsh*t from his neighbor. Take that six pack of beer your wasting with your neighbor to my house, and my girlfriend will invite some of her friends over and i'll hook you up, Im in Los Angeles too. I bet if i were to get jbrondum laid he wouldnt give a rats ass about a dvdr war.

  6. Yeah, FIREWORKS....
Well, Anaheim Hills don`t need one because Mr. John Brondum just got his neighbor FIRED.

$hit, you don`t even have a DVD burner.
Don`t worry I`m buying the 4x Ricoh5240 soon and I will have my 2.4x FEDEX`d to you for free.

Trucks will win because airplanes aren't real transportation and they don't support 4-wheel drive.

Hey, tx, what was that quote in the 1920s from the cheif of the Central Pacific....

"Airplanes are a novelty, they will never replace the train as a practical solution for transporting freight".

Or even better, the RKO executive who fired Lucielle Ball in 1947 and said she was washed up... (I Love Lucy started in 1951) and Desilu bought RKO in 1958.

    Syphic,

...and more war stories, which seems to be what people here actually wants - though claiming not to ?!?
I came here to relay some "insider" information and all you get is crap. If you wanna discuss the 3 reasons why the DVD+R/W might be more favorable to the industry, please do so and keep other issues a side.
...won't even comment on the rest cause it's just to damn lame, but maybe my wife would like to say a few words there...

    tompika,

So you need a DVD Writer to post in here ?!?
...but I'll take yours and come back later then.

Instead of all that trash talking, I would rather like to know more details about the 3 reasons that I stated in the beginning of this post. Like the production cost between the various models and more importantly the royalty you have to pay. Also if the DVD-R/W truly can't keep up to the same speed as the DVD+R/W, because of a difference in the technology.
...try waste your energy on these issues, rather than sounding like the Iraqi Information Minister.

No, Lucielle Ball was let go in 1947, they did not renew her contract because they said she did not have a future...

Desi was the smart one behind the scenes.... Live performance, three cameras using 35mm film not like other TV stations. As a result all the Lucy episodes are still clear.

And they said the "NEW" Coca-Cola started a firestorm ? As long as the DVD's I burn work in my player, i don't care about industry standards. If they phase out my DVD-R, then I'll just have to download some new porn and convert it and burn to DVD +R. How many times can you watch the same smut anyway ? By the time they come up with a standard we may all have TV boxes with 400 GB hard drives that store DIVX files that can play and record and convert your DV video. Whatever.

    jbrondum,

Some people just don't want to admit that they wasted money when they bought DVD-MINUS format drives.

And they are afraid to say how many coaster they burnt using those CHEAP CRAP disks like PRINCO.

I think the real waste was me reading this comment.

Can we lock this now? This thread is pure flames and arguments. Threads should have content.

  17. I have used both formats. I still don't understand what the differences are supposed to be. +R/W and -R/W play equally well on all my equipment, and recording speed is no big deal to me.

The winner will probably be determined by the home DVD recorder, and whatever format suddenly supports HDTV recording.

  18. Who GIVES a CRAP. If I throw the disc into the drive and it plays, then its a good disc. I throw my -R disc into a +r drive, will it read? YES!!!! If I throw a burned +R disc into a -R drive, will the drive be able to tell the difference? NO!!! Now who cares.

You've only mentioned of one crappy brand of discs that -R has. You obviously ignored all the success stories that people have had with their Accus, Dup EZs, Riteks, and BeAlls. On top of that, the discs are all are less expensive than the comparitive +R disc.

I Love this site. Better than reading the World Headlines. Who fired the last shot at Gettysburg? And was Little Round Top, really little and round? I think I'll go eat a Danish. I think I actually learned something after reading all the posts. Maybe someone thought it had an educational value so thats why it never got locked. Hmmmm?

In The Netherlands DVD-R/W is probably dead soon!!! Due to extra taxes raised on empty DVD-R/W discs!!!
From Tuesday on the prices of DVD-R/W discs will be doubled by this tax of 1 euro!!!
The tax for DVD+R/W will be only 50 cents and that means that DVD+R/W discs become cheaper then the DVD-R/W!!!
The bigger computer supplystores (Norrod, Funprice, Dynabyte and Vobis) almost don't sell DVD-R/W discs anymore.
For all you guys who can understand Dutch, read article below (taken from De Telegraaf newspaper)

for letting us in on this deal!

Amazing..how many other out there see this as a MICROSOFT-TYPE* move
by PHILLIPS the leading technology company (in computers anyway) in Holland to ELIMINATE the competition?

Or do DVD-R discs cost more to import (SILLY THOUGHT)
So PHILLIPS gets away with manipulating the market
So by manipulating the market in a way that used to be illegal here-think ANTITRUST- they eliminate the DVD-R!!

*(MICROSOFT GOT AWAY WITH IT LOCK, STOCK and BARREL, they even raised the price on their OS when DOJ ruled they HAD TO REDUCE IT!!!)

    No dcsos,

It's the government who introduced these taxes!!! A part of these taxes are given to the artists (e.g. Musicians, Producers, Movie companies, etc)
This tax is also being raised on CD-R(W) discs... It has to do something with copyright rights or something!!!
So a part of the money for every empty disc you buy is for the artists... EVEN IF I BURN MY OWN MOVIE ON IT!!! Silly, ej?!?

    Sorry then,
But tell me how has +RW escaped the same tax?
is it because +RW is not recognized as a media capable of copying artists work to?
You and I know it works just as well, but did they do this 'cause -R is the "OFFICIAL VIDEO FORMAT"

or could they be giving preferential treatment to a local company who I'm sure..lobbies the Dutch parliment?

    HAGGARD:

can you translate this a bit for us (sorry don't speak Dutch over here in old blighty). I understand the governments put the taxes up (and yes I actually think it is a good thing to tax blank CDs/DVDs as a 'copyright' charge, give the money to the industry and then leave us alone and let us copy / backup if we want), but why more on DVD-R than DVD+R. Nothing to do with Phillips being a Dutch company is it?

    EVERYONE:

Also, just my 2 penny's worth:

DVD-RAM is the best and most flexible format (play one end of the disc whilst recording at the other !!!) in my opinion.

DVD-RW will dissappear because (certainly in the UK) Panasonic have over 50% of the consumer DVD recorder market (DVD-RAM), Phillips has a large proportion aswell (DVD+RW), so where is DVD-RW?

I don't even think the price of DVD-RAM discs will have to drop, after all its a re-writeable format so you only need a few of them. For long term storage, DVD-R / DVD+R is more appropriate. Again the datarate and flexibility of the DVD-RAM format are its real strengths, you can almost use it as a HD recorder and utilise the timeshift qualities!

As for DVD+R / DVD-R - dunno, maybe one will dissappear.

Maybe we'll end up with DVD+R & DVD-RAM being the most common formats who knows.

Who cares? we all do because we don't want to waste money buying kit that will be extinct in a few years. But why? Consumer electronics equipment is moving at such a pace and prices are falling so quickly you don't really need to hedge your bets. If you get it wrong, buy the newest gadget in 2 years time at half the price but with twice the performance!

Its the same with inkjet printers, mine costs £60 to replace B&W and Colour ink - hell I can buy a better printer for less than that (and it includes ink) - so thats what I do, I then give the odl printer to a charity shop or something.

I guess my point is, what is better / worse will not determine which one will survive (except perhaps for DVD-RAM). They all work, they all have faults, find one that works for you and get on with the rest of your life.

I guess that the taxes for DVD-R/W are higher because the goverment thinks that this media is mainly for video and that DVD+R/W is mainly for data. Maybe they don't know that DVD+R/W is also capable to store video.... (Politicians are DUMB!!!)

So this has nothing to do with PHILLIPS being a dutch company!!!

I have bought a DVD+ writer because i'd see DVD- more less... Everywhere I buy my media, I see that DVD+ is coming more and cheaper that DVD-.

My DVD player (Cheap H&B) doesn't have any problems with + media and even my brothers Panasonic (don't know type, but it was one of the first DVD players sold in Holland) also doesn't have any problems with + media...
And I see that most of todays DVD players support both formats, so why bother buying + or - as probably both work fine...

So stop this WAR or Battle!!! Both formats will survive somehow...

Ha Ha - and I thought it was just UK politicians who didn't know what was going on!!

    Any chance of that translation?

Ur not getting a lot of support here for ur efforts but I dunno why, I have heard the same info in Japan.

I had a bit of saki (not with a product manager) with a retail manager in Japan who had the word Sony thinks the same but will continue to support both till they can push the blueray

First off, I don't agree with you...

But second, I want to attack this kind of logic... with more logic...

When they found out houses made from bricks were more sturdy and better to use than wood, when constructing houses, thus grabbing a larger market share in exterior building materials, did wood disappear? Hmm? I don't think so. We still have PLENTY of uses for it. The same can be said about the various formats of recordable media.

And as much as you may like to see -RAM take over the world, don't forget the owners of the DVD logo and the rights to use it are the backers of the -R/-RW format. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. At least not until DVD itself dies.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  30. This DVD-R +R format issue has been going on for years. It seems that the manufacturers are at a point where nobody will concede. From the looks of things it doesnt appear this will get settled ever. I almost think we may be onto a new technology which eventually will replace the entire dvdr stuff. The new blue ray disks? Who knows.
