I am trying to convert some anime avi files I downloaded off of the internet to DVD with Tmpg. I wanted to get all of the files down around 800mb so I could fit 5 episodes on a disk, I have been encoding them all at a constant bitrate of 4000 and with the motion estimate to save time. (this comes out with pretty good quality overall, I'm not worried about improving it more) For no apparent reason, one of these files doesn't compress that well. Every time I try to do the conversion with Tmpg, even using the exact same settings, the file comes out around 2gb instead of 800mb. Tmpeg won't allow me to set the bitrate lower than 2000 which still leaves the file around 1.2 gb, and the settings are identical to all the other files in the same series that had converted down to 800mb just fine. The only difference that I have found is that the files that worked fine were 29.97fps and this other file is at 23.97fps. I know this probably isn't enough info to figure out the problem, but tell me what you need and I will post it immediately.

I had a similar problem once a while back and I'm trying this from memory. When you use tmpenc, in the encode mode, if you set to 3:2 pulldown on playback, it should solve your problem.

I run into that problem when encoding from avi occasionally.
That one file is probably encoded with VBR audio which confuses TMPEnc. Open it in VirtualDub and it should warn you right away that the audio is VBR. Set the video to direct stream copy and the audio to full processing mode using PCM as your audio compression and then save the avi. The new avi should register properly in TMPEnc after that.
