  1. Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew what may of caused this error in Maestro and how I can rectify it. The error was when I tried to import an .m2V file.

The error said: Progressive frame flag in picture coding is set to 0 .

Basically, this is a home video...it's a friend of mine's video...I've actually never converted or captured to this point...but he started the process on his system....using Vegas Video 4 and DVD Architect. Basically, I have no clue what he did but I noticed his output was nice when playing the DVD on a standalone..but the problem was there were motion jitters...all types of jitters actually.

when I tested the video in DVD2AVI..I saw it was all progressive! I know that VHS is normally interlaced and I tested his initial capture, and sure enough, it was interlaced. So I figured he needed to reencode but I tried to just for fun run pulldown with "Interlace" frames set to true...and then reburn it on a disk to see if the motion issues were still there.

I did that but when I import the .M2V file into Maestro, I get the above error.

Anyone know what I can do to fix this issue?

    Thanks in advance

  2. If his source was a true interlaced home movie, it was most likely shot at 29.97fps. Just encode it as normally, there is NO NEED to de-interlace it. MPEG2 supports interlaced video.

Just encode the source to m2v, and author. Running pulldown on a 29.97fps source can cause all kinds of problems/errors, so don't do that either

I suspect that the jitters you saw on his video were from trying to convert/force a true interlaced source to progressive by blending the fields together.

  3. thanks for the response Vejita.......I have no clue what he did...but i'm gonna tell him to reencode again at 29.97 fps and leave everything else the way it is.

One thing that is odd though..isn't a captured home video upper field "FALSE" or "NO?" The thing is that his original capture onto the hard drive showed Interlaced, Alternate Scan Type and "upper field" TRUE...I thought it should be false.

So my question now is..when he encodes..he would leave the UPPER FIELD to true, right?

    thanks again in advance

2 things to remember about field order:

    1. DV tapes and files are set with Lower (B / Even) Field 1st. It's part of the spec.

    2. All other types and files (incl. captures) can be either 1 as long as it stays the same throughout the whole chain of Source-->Capture-->AVI-->Encode-->MPEG-->Author-->Burn & Play.
MPEG2 and DVD, as well as std TV's, will support both.

Field order is normally critical only when dealing with edits.

Bad video occurs when it is switched somewhere along the way (and not switched back again).

  5. ok, I'll try and remember those things. Thanks for the post...and my friend apparently has already tried to reencode this again the correct way. Hopefully it works out. Thanks
