I have had several people tell me that in order for a DVD+R to be read on my TV-DVD player, I have to change the bit setting to DVD-ROM instead of DVD+R.
My recorder is a Cendyne DVD+R (4x) /RW - CD-R/RW and my media is Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R (2.4X Speed Vitesse) discs (the purple label ones).
The program recomended on the www.dvdplusrw.org website told me my burner was not compatable (sony) and I cannot run the program to convert my DVD+R (or DVD+RW) discs to DVD-ROM.
I think my firmware is like 1A or something, I will have to check. Also there is another program that people were downloading from DVDinfo called "Meritline" what does that do and what will it tell me about my DVD+R's?
Sorry for the questions, but I want to back up all of my VHS movies (originally on CD-R as INDEO 4 Compression) to DVD+R so I will always have them.
Thanks ...

If you have firmware version 1.A0 or 1.A1 then your DVD+R media are burnt as DVD-ROM by default so no need to change anything. You can check the book type with DVDInfo on the media you have burnt.
If your DVD player can't read your media maybe your doing something wrong in the authoring process or maybe it can't read burnt media at all. -
LOL
Well, I read the article on UDF 1.02, so I used NERO Burning ROM and choose UDF/ISS9600 project and burned the DVD+R and once finished, it said my book type was DVD-ROM ... and all I did was choose the UDF/ISS9600 project.
Works fine on my DVD player. Unfortunatly "my" DVD Player upstairs does not accept DVD+R's. Hmmm ... I guess its an older one .. it's an Emmerson.
Anyways, I figured out what was the problem. After 5 coasters, two discs that work, one of those that I copied the info from (UDF etc.) I got the DVD+R's to work.
Thanks for your info ! -
You can also get this message if there is a BLANK media inside
I have a friend works in a shop and last week (I was off work) so we tested more then a dozen settop players like this:
I made 4 copies of a movie (on-the-fly) using RECORDNOW MAX:
The disc was closed had AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS, size 4.36GB
1. one DVD+RW and one DVD+R booktype DVD-ROM
2. one DVD+RW and one DVD+R booktype not set
ALL of them played the first group (as DVD-ROM) perfectly.
Even the ones that were NOT supposed to read ANY WRITEABLE media.
Also tested around my neighborhood (couple of really old players)
got the same result. -
AH!!
Yes, it was a blank DVD+R. I was trying to get the book type to DVD-ROM.
I use NERO to burn UDF/ISO9600 with my current media (listed above) and I have no problems, knock on wood... (book type says its DVD-ROM) on NERO's Disc Info icon.
Thanks !
God, you really have to make some coasters to get everything you want out of DVD burning. yesh ... luckly I only wasted 5 ... could have been a whole pack of 12. -

What about the Emmerson?
I bet it would play them too.
Use RW and try different softwares, settings to find out what works for you.
Good luck -
I cannot use a DVD+RW because once I burn it, it displays the Book Type as a DVD+RW. DVD+R's display DVD-Rom as the book type.
The Emmerson has never played any of my DVD+R's. Which sucks because this will be my primary DVD player soon. Grrr. Any suggestions?
And yeah, I was lucky at creating only 5 coasters. Some of those coasters work ... actually 4 of them work on my PC ... but what good does that do me? LOL -

I don't think I can chage the booktype in nero like that ... I've tried and the button doesn't exist. Maybe I didn't try it after I burned a DVD+RW and the other program you have. The error was for blank media on the other program.
I will try that when I get home from work.
thanks, -
The best thing if you set the drive to burn every single DVD in DVD-ROM specification

Change of bitsetting/book type will only work if the drive's firmware support this feature. The ND-1100a firmware doesn't support this but you can flash it into a HP dvd300i which support change of book type on DVD+RW (DVD+R is still burnt as DVD-ROM by default).

Ah..
