Just ran into an audio/video sync problem and not sure why. Have had success in the past, but today...no such luck.

Capturing from VHS and Video Disk (amazing it still works) using ADS Instant DVD and Ulead VS6. The captured MPEG when played on the computer is in sync. Author using TMPEG DVD Author and burn with Nero Express and the sync is now off.

Not sure where to look for the problem. Have converted a couple other VHS tapes and not a problem with the sync. Hoping someone has some ideas. TIA

  2. I had some sync problem my self. When I played back the MPEG 2with windows media player it was fine and TMPG editting player it was fine. but power DVD and MPEg2VCR could not play it back right there was a problem with the fine. SOme time's when you have old tape's they have sound problem that can mess up the sync problem I have found that ATI AIW is the best for capturing old tape's with MMC that's there capture software for there card's. They just put a filter you clean up old tape's and it work's great. I also have a Dazzle 2 and it's a great capture card but not so good for old tape's. The Dazzle has better audio sound but has alot of sync problem with old VHS tape's great for satellite capture's. One thing there is one problem with some old tape's with the ATI AIW some NTSC tape's do not dispaly back right. There is one fix to use a WORLD WIDE VCR send the picture out as PAL-M or PAL-N and capture as PAL-M or PAL-N and ever thing will be fine. I have capture some tape's with the Dazzle 2 and the sound did not have any problem but when tape's get old ATI AIW record's the audio in another way that work's great for capture's of old VHS

  3. I'm new to burning discs so I'm not sure if this is right. I also had a problem with audio about 2 seconds ahead of the video. What I ended up doing is during encoding I capped the video bitrate at 9M (the default is 10) and doubled the audio bitrate and sampling frequeny. So far I burned 2 videos without sync problems. You might want to try increase or decrease bitrates depends on whether your audio is ahead or behind. Please post the results either way. Thanks.

Thanks much for the ideas. I just checked the audio bit rate using AVIcodec and it is reporting a bit rate of 0 for this file . So hopefully I can re-encode the file and get squared away. I'll let you know how it turns out. Hoping I don't have to re-capture. Thx again for the help.

I have had intermittent sync problems too when capturing from VHS.

I found this VirtualDub Sync mod http://www-user.rhrk.uni-kl.de/~dittrich/sync/ that I have just started experimenting with. Looks promising.

Haven't been able to get VirtualDub to work with my ADS IDVD box The CapWiz software that is supplied with this box is a real piece of junk...a lot of sync problems there. Solved most of them by using the IDVD box with Visual Studio 6, but now the sync problem has resurfaced.

I re-encoded the files I captured yesterday and the sync was much better, but the amount it was off was still noticeable near the end of the video. I've been using a slightly different (but faster) trimming process with the files using VS6, so maybe I need to go back to the slower method that I was using before and see if that works. The problem there is that I don't have the original captured files, so I'll have to start from the beginning and re-capture.

Did some other searching on this forum and one possible way to end this frustration would be to shell out more money and go with the Canopus ADVC100. Didn't hear any negative feedback on this piece of hardware, plus the price is now below $300. Might be worth the investment considering the amount of time that these sync problems are wasting.

Thx again for the reply posts...much appreciated.

Didn't use the "Smart Render" feature in Ulead Visual Studio 6 and so far the sync problem has disappeared.

Never tried to burn with VS6. I already deleted the out of sync file so I can't even burn it to a DVD+RW and give it a test run. Good idea I'll try it sometime and see what happens.
