  1. I use both programs but I'd like to know which one you recommend. CloneDVD is very fast but especially with an adjustment in you registry Instant Copy has very much possibilities of stripping the extra's.

    Please advise.

  2. I suspect IC7 is better when it comes to quality since it's an encoder. Never used the other program however since you say it's fast I bet it's a trans-coder. Myself I use DVDshrink which is free or DVD2one.

  3. Thanks Bob,

Ther are so many different programs and even after reading about them and trying them all (including DVD2One , DVD schrink etc) I'm still not sure which program is "the best" or easiest to use. I had my hopes set on CloneDVD but upto now Instant Copy still is my favourite especially if I'm not in a hurry.

  4. IC7 will give you better result except for animes. and no, IC7 can't get rid of the extra you don't want even with the registry hack, it will corupt the IFO and won't play in some/all dvd player

IC7 + IFOedit or CloneDVD (or DVDShrink that look to have better quality)

  5. I made a backup of "Scorpions-Acoustica" DVD with CloneDVD first. I kept menus, DD and DTS, removed the extras. The quality wasn't that bad, but in the last song I noticed some very ugly macroblocks. So I redid the backup with IC7.
This time I kept menus, removed DTS and the extras: the result was worse! The last song had more macroblocks. Maybe the quality of the original is bad enough, so recompressing might gave an almost unbearable result.
But the bottom line is I've got better result with CloneDVD, in 45~50 mins than IC7 in 3 hours (and DTS-less).

  6. I've never used CloneDVD. But I use IC7 exclusively. As was said before, don't use IC7 to remove things. The disks will play in my players, but on one, after removing a few extras, the disk started on one of the deleted scenes(?!?). So, if I want to remove anything, I do it with IfoEdit. And then, from there, run it all through IC7. I've had to compress some things up to 50% (because I'm a freak about keeping everything ), and the quality (IMHO) was superb, compared to others.

    HTH.

Hey a great article and just as I thought the final statements pretty much says it all. BTW from this article IC7 may be the winner in quality but the difference would go un-detected by most IMO.

    "Overall:

As said at the beginning of this page, it's hard to identify a clear winner. However, we can give you some advice. For example, when you're looking for the easiest to use software and you have no experience whatsoever with backing-up DVDs, we would recommend DVDXCopy XPRESS. This software is by far the easiest to use software (insert original DVD, select main movie, audio stream, subtitle and hit start). DVDXCopy XPRESS can however only be used to copy the main movie from a DVD.

If you're looking for software that produces the best video quality we'd say go for InstantCopy. We do however feel that InstantCopy has some disadvantages that need to be improved. For one, it's by far the slowest software when it comes to compressing your DVDs. Besides that, it's also the hardest software to use and you'll need to use extra software to tweak the InstantCopy software.

The CloneDVD, DVD2one and DVD Shrink software are very close to each other. CloneDVD has by far the nicest looking interface and of these three, it's the only software that has a built-in write engine. During our tests the video quality of CloneDVD was slightly better than DVD2one. DVD Shrink produced the lowest quality although it wasn't far behind. DVD Shrink is however a clear winner when it comes to price of the software packages as it's the only software that's completely free."

they left out a simple fact

on a less than 6.5 gig movie

    dvdshrink is the best

on a more than 6.5 gig movie

    ic7 is the best

the movies that they did obviously must be longer than 6.5 gig

as dvd shrink kept getting low scores

  11. IC7 clearly is the best for full DVD backups. It's the only one that at 50% compression or less on the extras still creates watchable extras.

If I am gonna keep the extras. I want them to be decent quality not stills or pixelated.

Very interesting read. I also prefer and use Instant Copy compared to other programs. I used to use DVD2ONE all the time, but the main downside is that the program DRASTICALLY slows down the computer. Whereas Instant Copy does not completely slow down my computer and I can run other applications like Adobe Photoshop, AOL, and Internet Explorer without any real slowdown. I'm not using a slow computer, so that can't be a factor (P4 2.66GHz, 512 MB RDRAM)
