  1. Hey,

I was wondering if anybody knew about or could recommend any dedicated MPEG-2 and/or MPEG-4 encoding cards for the PC (PCI preferably, but also FireWire). The Capture Cards section is just that, about capture cards... I just want a dedicated encoding card.

    Thanks.

Looking for a hardware card that only assists in encoding?

The old MPEG SuperCharger from Discreet worked in conjunction with Cleaner 5, but that kind of hardware has bitten the bullet.

If you are asking for a card that just encodes, realize that those are expensive and prioprietary for use with the encoding software.

These encode to MPEG2 with hardware (during capture):

    MATROX RTX100

    Excellent professional card.

    CANOPUS MPEG PRO EMR
    http://www.canopus.com/US/products/MPEGPRO_EMR/pt_MPEGPRO_EMR.asp
This one looks new. I don't remember seeing it before! Finally a lower-priced quality Canopus item. External USB 1.1/2.0 device.

    CANOPUS MPEG PRO MVR
    http://www.canopus.com/US/products/MPEGPRO_MVR/pt_MPEGPRO_MVR.asp
Internal PCI version. Same price. Same item.

    CANOPUS AMBER
    http://www.canopus.com/US/products/Amber/pm_amber.asp
DV input with MPEG output. Older card. The newer MPEG PRO series looks more promising.

    HAUPPAUGE WINTV PVR
    http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvpvr_datasheet.htm
A mediocre card with horrid software. Only good point is that it is cheap. Not enough encoding options as compared to an ATI or the ones above.

    ATI ALL IN WONDER 9800
    http://mirror.ati.com/products/radeon9800/aiw9800pro/specs.html
Though all previous All In Wonder Radeon cards used a hybrid form of hardware-assisted MPEG encoding (based on Ligos GoMotion technology), the newest AIW Radeon features a chipset that does a majority of the MPEG encoding natively in the hardware, releasing even more of the CPU load.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  4. Can't you just check (mpeg-2 / mpeg-4) in the capture card list to get ones with those features ?

If you are going to spend $, why not buy a replayTV or something. I believe you can network them and pull the mpeg right off.

i think he just wants a mpeg adapter card (it has nothing to do with capturing as u run your video out into it , but it encodes video at blazing speed)

but the are expensive $600.00 plus

and some of them are not so good with multi angled dvd (about 75% of all dvds) as they will have A/V sync problem

but with non multi angled dvds (usually episodes discs and older movies) and other video projects they work great

  6. Hi bestes,
I have the Realmagic DVR board for about 3 years and I never had it work correctly. It has been back to the factory 4 times, for replacement, modfiication, and everytime I get it back same thing. Intermittent blue screens, intermittent lockups, dvd playback problems. So I bought a Canopus DVStorm 2. I put it in the same system, loaded the software, and never had a moment of grief. The Realmagic card is still at the company (for over 1 month), still no problems found, and they won't buy it back. Spend the extra money and go with a Canopus card!!
