I captured an AVI file from my Min-DV camcorder the other day. I want to open it up in VirtualDub so I can cut it into smalled chunks. I keep getting this error message when I try to open it:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format "dvsd" (unknown)
VirtuaDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable"
What the heck does this mean? And how do I fix it? It's not a DIVX file...I just captured it as AVI. Could someone talk me through this?
Or, is there a better sodtware to cut a video up?
Thanks a bunch!

install the main concept dv codec will fix it ..
get the trial version to check it out ..
v-dub will not use the M$ dv codec .. -
There is also a free Panasonic codec available.

i havnt tried the panasonic codec to see if its vfw compatable (the MC one is) , but if its free -- sounds good to try it anyway ..
there is also another free one on the matrox web site .. havnt used that one either .. -
i also tried the canopus codec (which is very good) and it wouldnt work either for all programs ...
really - though its 49$ , the MC one really always does the trick .. -
DAMN!!! I have had the crappiest luck with this VirtualDub...
So, I installed the MainConcept DV Codec Demo...now the video plays in VirtualDub but I get this error warning at the beginning:
"AVI Type-1 File detected - VirtualDub cannot extract audio from this type of interleaved stream."
And of course, there is no audio...what the hell do I do here? I originally captured the file with Windows Movie Maker 2 as a DV-AVI. Is THIS the problem? Should I capture with Premiere instead?
Someone please help...before I lose more hair. I have a feeling it has to do with Windows Movie Maker 2...please HELP !!!

You want a Type 2 DV file. Premiere will do that.
There are programs that will do the conversion for you. I've never used them, so I can't recommend one. -
Look at the left hand under the tools section. There's a Type1 to Type 2 converter.
To save yourself some headache down the road, always transfer (or incorrectly referred to as capture), to a Type 2 .AVI, and only have one outside external codec installed on your system (ie Panasonic, Canopus, etc.....). Vdub and Premiere should play and edit no probs. Any transfer utility (capture software), worth half it's salt should let you capture in Type 2 AVI.
Good luck..... -
Good reads. Everyone who's lost should check this out.....

You folks have been great. I did a test last night by capturing in Premiere instead. Everything worked great. I will use Premiere for capture from now on.
Is there any way to capture with Windows Maker Maker 2 as a type-2 AVI file? If anyone know, let me know.
Thanks again all...this has been a great learning experience.

Hi,
I want to ask is there any way to capture my DV movie directly deinterlaced?
It's becouse I get it interlaced and then I encode it with VD using the deinterlace filter but the quality is not satisfactorily. -
