You could always get an Xbox with mod chip
. Plays DivX fine and you can serve them from you PC via the Ethernet port.

Do you guys think that Panasonic or Toshiba or Sony will come out with Divx capable players soon? I think I would rather buy from a major brand or possibly a Xbox vs some lesser known company.

hello,
Thanks everybody for the info on the stand alone divx player. I will probably wait until sony, jvc or the big boys release them

I doubt Sony will ever produce a DivX player. They have too much invested in the movie industry to produce a player that might encourage piracy. In fact, I'm sure most the "big boys" aren't releasing DivX machines for similar reasons.
If the DVD player is built like their CD-RW drives, I'm jumping on the bandwagon. -
Can you play Divx moves in an out of the box XBOX? I'm wondering about a stand alond DVD player that can play Divx and if the XBox will do it it can pull double duty.
Also, do you just burn a data CD with the divx movies on it? Is there some sort of format (like and equivalent to SVCD or something) that you must burn it in?
Thanks,

I don't know if the Xbox needs to be modded to play Divx files.. but check out http://www.broadq.com for the PS2. It's an amazing piece of software.

I read on Doom 9 that DIVX has certified ESS,the chipset maker and DVD players with the ESS chipset are expected in the second half of 2003. ESS chipsets started DVD hacking,Apex for example.

Thanks. One last question. If I burn Divx files on CD-R, will it play them, or would it have to be on DVD-R?
I'm guessing that this works by just burning Data discs and then allowing the player to read the directory structure. -
Again, I don't know how the Xbox reads divx files, but the QCast for the PS2 works through the network adaptor, so your computer acts as a media server. That way, all of the movies you have can be accessed immediately, with no need to burn to cd or dvd-r. I'm assuming the XBox would also use a network adaptor, but I really don't know.

Just to clear up something discused here You Do Need To Mod The Xbox before it will play anything other than Self Made and Bought DVD and Bought Games only "i.e The Original" once the mod is installed you can play copied games thats all. what you need to do is load some software on the X-Box hard drive called Media player "sounds familiar" then you can play (all) DivX inc XviD and DivX 3.1 which i might add a lot of the Divx standalone Players dont or have problems with, go read the Kiss review in the DVD Players section.
I have a modded box done myself but i do have some knowledge of it which you need if your going to attempt this you will need to read here
http://www.xbox-scene.com essentially what you are doing is chipping the box so you can make a boot disk to boot the X-Box so that you can copy files from the boot disk to the X-Box but you have to download some tools do make this disk and the site listed will get you started.
Option 2 is to buy an X-Box send it to the place your buying the chip from
costs around £25 they will do it for you and send it back ready to play DiVx and any other format that a PC does.
Chipping X-Boxes is considered by some to be illegal pending many microsoft law suits but no more illegal than copying CDs or DVD and you may find finding info on this is difficult but Xbox Scene is where you start.
it took me about 3 - 4 days to find the info get the box and the chip install and play other formats and i knew nothing when i started so dont be scared just pay attention as you go.
