  1. First off the specifics: I created a VCD using Cyberlink's Power Director Pro. I used Memorex CD-RW media. I know the VCD works. I can stick the disc into my computer CD drive and the encoded VCD pops up with the provided Cyberlink set of controls. I know it is there. I then took the disc and put it into the new APEX 1200 AD and nothing happened. Have I done something wrong? I captured video from my camcorder then edited and made some title pages. Finally, I produced the VCD. Am I doing something wrong? In the compatibility section, it says the DVD player I got supports VCD and SVCD. Help would be appreciated otherwise the new machine is heading back to Sears. Thanks.

    ralph,
Take it back to Sears, and get a 1201, and I think some of them might not play them either, or a mintek, or Norcent at Wally Mart, like 50 bucks.
Personally, my 1201 died about 6 months into life, so I didn't buy another. I bought a Philips 724 at WallyMart for 78 clearance price. I figure if Philips, who owns VCD copyright, won't play VCD, who will. So far, it has lapped up everything I have thrown at it, and they have a warranty that gives a reduced price to replace, unlike Apex, who wanted 39 bucks, flat rate to repair a 59 buck machine, I pay S&H, most likely 10 to 20 more to the Left Coast from here.

    Zippy,
Were there "cracks" to get them to play, or not? I know the Koss "crack" works, and how in the hell anyone can say "do this, this, this, and 10 more steps" and it will do it. Has to be a company tech putting this stuff on line. Randomly punching buttons, and recording what you just did, just seems farfetched, to me. My thanks to whoever does it, but still....

  6. Thanks all. It is going back to Sears. Sam's Club is selling a Daewoo that says it suppotys VCD and SVCD. BTW, I wouldn't recommned the APEX. After opening the box, the thing is really cheap. Glad I did a test.

I agree. I think this stuff gets put out to increase sales, so it's all tied into sales and marketing. Apparently Apex disabled VCD capability on the 1200 so that they wouldn't have to pay licencing fees.

For information on the Apex 1200, hacking etc. go here.

The first entry at that forum gives info on restoring vcd on some 1200's, be warned....not for the technically challenged.
