quite simply YES you need a modchip to play backup ps2 games the original disks contain a region coding that cannot be copied by any cd/dvd recording program the modchip imputs this coding when a disk is played ( the modchip also performs other functions needed to play backup disks) however if you dont fancy fiddling inside your ps2 you can get a usb modchip that you just plug in to the front usb port of the ps2 however this method also requires an action replay 2 or gameshark 2 cartrage and an original game disk as a swap trick is used to make the backup play personally i recommend you get someone who knows what they are doing to fit an internal modchip like the dms3 as it will allow direct boot of backup without any swap tricks or cartrages these are tricky to fit hence why i suggested getting someone who knows what they are doing to fit it ... if its done wrong your ps2 could be damaged

No you DO NOT need a mod chip to play backups. All you need is to install the flip-top (no soldering or touching any wires) which is basically another top (case) and swap magic discs.

Search for flip-top to find out more info.
