I downloaded a divx file along with its srt file, and I don't know how to get the srt to play along with the divx file. The video works, but no subtitles and the names of the files are exactly the same.

Since the .srt files are subtitles, you may need a subtitle filter in Virtual Dub to display them on your AVI files. TextSub and VobSub are two subtitle filters I believe will work. They are both part of VobSub 2.18.
