If you're ripping DVD with the intention to create (S)VCD, then keep in mind that (S)VCD doen't accept 16:9/anamorphic. Only 4:3 (standard TV) is accepted.
So to keep the same aspect-ratio of your source, you'll get black borders at the top and bottom of the screen (you can get arround this, but then your display gets worse or you loose picture at the left and right of the screen).
Using designed rippers (dvd -> (s)vcd), you should be able to setup things wright to get this 16:9 -> 4:3 correctly. -
You CAN create anamorphic SVCDs, the SVCD standard just doesn't have the signal that tells your Equipment to switch to 16:9 mode like a DVD does. Try DVD2SVCD, this has an option to create anamorphic SVCDs. The only downside is that if you watch them on a normal 4:3 TV they will look virtically stretched (unless your 4:3 TV has a 16:9 button that is
)

mh2360 - that's not an anamorphic SVCD that's a SVCD with a DAR of 16:9 there's a difference. Anamorphic SVCDs are not supported by the standard. However some DVD players can play them. 16:9 DVDs are not supported by the standard, but pretty much any DVD will play it anyway (xSVCD).
Anamorphic DVDs are only supported at 720x480. In theory a xSVCD at 720x480 with the 16:9 DAR flag will work correctly on some players. But in practice the number of players is VERY small.
Hence, it's recommend that if you have a standard TV you letterbox your SVCDs. If you have a widescreen TV you can either letterbox (and live with the 4 black borders) or author at 16:9 and accept that the disc will not play correctly on 4:3 TVs.
