hi
from what i see most or all the dvd software is feature limited and will probably stay that way....
sure its possible to copy dvds or author from scratch home movies to dvd...but only with simple features!
correct me if i am erroneous ....i need software that will take vhs wedding video from a camcorder and after its on a computer hdd, it will allow me to very complex menus...like menus with customised (not factory preset templates) video clips with customized music of my choice....
i like multiple audio tracks...the feature home video and optional soundtracks to be available (like wedding commentary by guests and party)
and customized by the user , not preset by the software, bonus features for the wedding...
to be concise, i want to take wedding of 2 hours and make a home made dvd of top of the line quality features like the studios offer...
but no available software anywhere available in one package to handle this for the public?....just watered down dvd software for basic production?

As Treebeard said, what you are asking for is proffesional level features at a consumer level price. Not going to happen for a long time.
The packages used by the Pros such as Sceanrist and maybe Maestro, allow you to achieve (almost) anything that is in the DVD spec. However, they don't hold your hand in any way and have a very steep learning curve. Also, they provide no help with assets at all. By this I mean they provide absolutley nothing in terms of backgrounds, menus, buttons etc. All must be created externally using something like photoshop, and the imported. Using a package like this is not for tha faint of heart nor the tight wallet!
Anyway, best of luck with your endeavours. -
MAGIX video deLuxe 2,0 is an all-in-one video studio on PC. Videos, movies, photos and additional audio and video material can be re-worked from the most diverse sources on the PC. Long films can be divided into different chapters and/or scenes automatically. Or the other way around: short takes can be integrated automatically into a movie.
In the Storyboard mode, all scenes are represented in sequence on the storyboard. They can be placed in the correct order with the mouse, be furnished with texts, titles, effects, transitions and a new soundtrack.
The timeline mode is for more detailed editing. Here, all files are displayed as objects on different tracks. Basically, objects positioned one over the other are played simultaneously, while objects positioned one behind the other are played successively. Additional material from the Media Pool can be loaded via drag & drop or by double click. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a video, photo, graphic, subtitle, commentary, sound, song, rtf text file or even a MIDI file – all objects can be processed uniformly and intuitively.
When your video is finished, you can then utilize it in any number of ways. You can play it back on the video tape player or play it on the camcorder. You can store it on CD-ROM. You can burn it onto (S) Video CD or DVD and then, for example, enjoy it on television. Or you can present your work on the internet – on your homepage, as a Videomail to friends, or as a creative contribution to Web TV on www.magix.com. And if you still don’t have your own impressive homepage, MAGIX video deLuxe 2.0 helps you to create one. -
If you are looking to spend the money for multiple audio tracks, check out Sonic ReelDVD (around $700, I think).
For every other feature you mentioned except for mutiple audio tracks, check out DVD Lab ($80, www.mediachance.com )
But to answer your title question, I don't think we are being shortchanged. None of this stuff is secret, none of it is restricted - if you can pay for it, you can learn to use it.
However, getting all the features you want may take quite a bit of money, and quite a bit of a learning curve.- housepig

how does your post address apaw's questions?
and even if you want to pimp Magix programs, isn't there a better way than cutting and pasting promo info from their website? Why not just drop in a link, and save us 3 paragraphs of fluff?- housepig

you want some good software for mixing between scenes loom at ulead mdia stuido pro 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0 but a full version will cost at least $500, but the effects are fantastic, it will allow mising of up to 5 stereo audio tracks all together but not seperately. you could mix original audio, music and commintary and fade in and out softer or louder, keep in mind a 5 minute video takes me 2 hours to mix, did a 1 hour wedding once took 6-10 hours just for the mixing in Media studio so all this stuff is very time consuming.

After that, you'll have to move to a MAC and use DVDSP, or use Sonic's Scenarist, or DVD Producer in Windows.
Or wait for Adobe's Encore. -
Yeah, on windows, it is, frankly, a case of using DVDlab (very promising indeed, but not quite mature yet), or Adobe Encore for a few hundred dollars more.
If it weren't for the fact that I hate Steve Jobs' attitude, I'd seriously consider using DVD Studio Pro 2.0 (NOT 1.5!). I must reluctantly admit that DVD SP 2.0 is unquestionably (IMHO) the best DVD authoring application by far for under a thousand dollars.
Dammit, I wish OS-X emulation was a reality on x86 Intel architecture!
