  1. Hi

Does anyone know of a good Mac emulator available for the PC? I am running Windows XP, and had to sell my iMac just a week ago. Now I'm going cold turkey - nice and friendly as XP can be (can be!), it's still not a patch on the MacOS.

Plus, I have to play some of my old games again!

Talking of which, anyone remember the days when your computers had hard drives measured in megabytes? I remember having an Apple LC475, with 8MB RAM and an 80MB hard drive. I was scrapping over a poxy 10MB space on the hard drive and trying to get that extra 100KB RAM freed up! I came across an old MacUser magazie the other day: "25MHz! Apple's fastest yet!".

If it helps, I still have a copy of MacOS 8.1 that I bought ages ago.

    Thanks for any help!

The only ones I've ever seen is Balisk and it only supports emulating OLD hardware. Good to play EV on if I remember correctly, but not EV Nova.

  3. Lol! That's the game I want to play!

Wasn't it great? EV Nova just got a little too much for me to cope with though...

I love the EV series games from Ambrosia software. I was running a mac emulator just so i could play them, it worked fine on my windows 98 system but was too buggy in XP.

Did you know they are porting the EV NOVA over to the PC, Im so excited i check the status log everyday to check for updates. They are almost done w/ beta testing and should be done soon. I think they are also creating EV & EVO plugins for the port so u can play all 3 on a PC, woohoo happy days are here.

here is a link to the status log, it has some screenshots & short movie clips

I'm picking up a G3 just to play Marathon again. I once used to make maps for the game, was pretty good at it too, but I never got in on one of the mods that came out for it. It was also the game that got me to go to my first LAN party on a bunch of PowerMacs back in 1996. Marathon 2 was released for the PC but not the rest of the lot. I guess someone made a Halflife port of it that's pretty good but I haven't seen it around. Dunno if I'd like 3D models instead of sprites

What's EV? I didn't get many games for my old Mac Performa.

EV (Escape Velocity) is a highly addictive open ended space game.
ther is also EVO (Overide) and EV NOVA.

Once you start playing them you wont want to stop.

If you run Linux or BSD there are a few good emulators around. Don't know of any for winderz. Though I'm sure somewhere there is software for pay that does a good job.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

I've never found a Mac OS emulator that worked decently. Most of them didn't support modern versions of Mac OS ("modern" meaning System 7.0 or later). The Mac isn't very friendly to emulation because it has a lot of Apple-specific hardware to emulate and because Apple doesn't like to share the Mac-specific ROM. Of course, now that the Mac "ROM" is actually stored in a file and loaded in to RAM during boot, it's at least available.

Aleph One! Bungie released the source to the Marathon 2/Infinity game engine, and it's now a community project. It's not perfect, but it's advanced a lot. It can't run Marathon 1 games, but one of the A1-based projects (M1A1) is a complete port of Marathon 1 to Aleph One. A1 includes better graphics support, modern network play, and a scripting language for content creation. It also runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS 9, and Mac OS X (OS 9 support lags behind the others a bit because it has more OS-specific code and fewer people working on it).

This is not an emulator but it may achieve the results you seek

A friend of mine has this (the opposite acutally - uses a MAC and switches to windows for his kids games - go figure.)

EV was (and possibly still is) my all time favorite game... Loved my Mac back then, when I had money to burn and I haden't been infected with the evil Microsoft virus called windows...

Sadly unless something has changed VPC (virtual PC) for windows only lets you run other versions of windows, not MacOS. The PC version is mainly use for testing software on different configurations.

I'm going to have to check that new Marathon project out. My big draw to Marathon was that it had such a bizarre but intriguing story to go along with shooting aliens, and some of the effects they were able to pull off with their mapping techniques was pretty impressive for the time. I was kinda sad yet excited when Infinity came out (I still have the box set, one never opened and the other is my copy to play). The mods that came out shortly after were pretty good; EVIL and Tempus Irae I think were the two big mods. Man that was such an easy game to mod compared to today

Had to dig up this old post to let you all know that EV NOVA has been released to the Windows side now. Its a highly addictive game its $30 to register or you can play free for 30days and then it becomes crippleware.

Im so excited- best game ive played
