Am having big trouble with my conversions. When I load an XVID file into TMPGEnc and click start I get messages like 'invalid pointer operation', 'write error at address xxxx in kernel32.dll at yyyy' etc. Have been told to use the directshow multimedia plug in which does eliminate the errors mentioned (and also tells me that every file I load has 30fps!!!!) but the resulting mpeg plays fine for 8 seconds and then is jerky for around 2 seconds (like a webcam), fine again for 8 and then jerky for 2 again and so on.

An example of a file I'm converting (from GSpot):

    Codec: XVID 576x240 23.976fps

    Audio: 0x0055 (mp3) ID'd as MPEG-1 layer 3

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to install something or update something? It's really getting me down!

Up in the top right hand portion of G-spot does it say that Xvid Codec is not installed?
    This is so much fun!

GSpot tells me that the XVID codec IS installed. Bit more info to add:

Heard from one of the forums about a file called ffdshow. Installed this last night. What does this file do? Should I have had this installed previously to succesfully convert XVID files? Since, when I click on 'Codec IS installed (details)' it now tells me:

Directshow is apparently able to play the file as well, though it has selected a different codec, the ffdshow mpeg 4 video decoder, whose primary 4cc (XVID), is also identical to that of the file, making that selection equivalently as good.

Have just tried loading an XVID file into TMPGEnc after installing ffdshow and with the directshow multimedia setting as high priority which beforehand made TMPGEnc supply 30fps for every AVI it's now telling me the correct frame rate. So, fingers crossed, the mpeg will convert properly..... Will post my findings tonight......

I had this problem and after hour of playing just gave up.
Used Virtualdub to re compress to another codec and then
    TMPG accepted it

  7. Encoding XVIDS using TmpGenc is usually much less painfull if you frameserve from virtualdub. Look in the guides for info on how to do this.

  9. I would go with what bugster says, however try uninstalling tmpgenc first and then reinstalling.
    If it's wet, drink it
