Just a friendly word of advice...careful if you buy this OEM of the DRU-500 series. I bought it, tried it with Nero....COASTER, COASTER, COASTER....then i decided to do something i usually don't like to do and i flashed the drive with DRU-500 firmware and it has been doing well so far, so if you are having problems like that, might want to flash it, but be careful flashing...make sure it's a good source...

While the SONY drives tend to be a little tricky to get things going right (different media is compatible with different recording s/w and f/w versions), I would attribute your problems to Nero, probably. Anything after 5.5.4.17 and 5.5.10.28 has been a disaster with the SONY drive. The latest versions, 5.5.10.28 and .35 are a huge improvement and appear to operate with most of the media most of the time.
With Nero, I currently can write to any 4X media (-R or +R) with the latest version of the f/w (2.0e). However, certain older -R media cannot be written with this version of f/w (and Nero). To use Nero I need to flash-back into 1.0d !!!
This whole mess must have nothing to do with the media, f/w or my brains since RecordNow DX doesn't seem to mind recording.
You might ask why I bother with Nero? Well, It is the only s/w I have that can write proper UDF 1.05 DVD ROM disks, and you know, DVD Video is not the only thing DVD Recorders are made of 8)The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
