This forum seems to be pretty active. Hopefully someone here has had and solved this problem.

From the software packaged with the drive, I have installed RecordNow DX, Simple Backup, DLA, and MyDVD. All worked fine when installed, but after installing MyDVD, SimpleBackup has given me various hangs and Windows blue screen errors when I try to launch it. I have set the jumper on the DRU-510A as master and my DVD-ROM drive as slave, per Sony's instructions, and tried installing the applications in the order they suggest. But even the the other applications removed, Simple Backup just will not run as long as MyDVD is installed on the system. Sony tech support says they should work OK together, but they don't on my system.

I'm not thrilled with the prospect of having to uninstall MyDVD every time I want to do a backup. Any suggestions would be appreciated (except for the one that would say reformat the drive and re-install Windows -- I'll probably try that on a spare drive just to see if it works, but I don't think I could ever rebuild what I have on the system).

No Offense, but Win ME has to to be the most unstable OS ever produced. Do yourself a favor, spend $95.00 for a full version of WIN XP Home and enjoy the benefits.

Yep, I'm well aware that ME is the worst windows since 3.1, but XP has some compatibility issues with some of my hardware and software, which has kept me from moving to it. Every time I decide to bite the bullet and upgrade, I read about another problem that would affect me. A more likely solution for me would be to back up to Win98 SE, but I'm sure that would not be totally without problems.

I have been living with ME for some time now, and it's actually reasonably stable with what I had installed until I started trying to burn DVDs. My wife uses Win 2000 and sings its praises (she lives in an NT world), but I have seen her rebuild that more than I have had to rebuild ME. I guess I look at all of Windows as so much junk and I hate paying Microsoft to go from one set of problems to another.
