  1. Hi,

I am looking to overclock my Athlon XP 1800+.

My case is always ice cold so I dont think cooling will be a problem. (I have 4 case fans)

I have an ECS K7S5A with SiS 735 chipset.

Is there a guide somewhere online that I can follow for this?

Also, what is a good speed to o/c for this chip?

    All help is appreciated.

  2. m8, i know sume stuff about overclocking but for much better advice go and visit

www.futuremark.com and check out their forums! they know their stuff there!

(btw, how well u can overclcok your process depends on
    a) your cooling
    b) how good your processor is- if its pretty new u may be lucky enough to get a good serial number for it and overclcok it big time, if its old you may have less luck!)
1)Why Not Overclock a little?! speed 4 free!!!!
    2) If your question has anything to do with copying PS2/PC/XBox games, find a more appropriate website

As freak said, check out www.futuremark.com or www.overclockers.com.
After checking overclockers CPU database, it seems that the palomino (green CPU) and the T-Bird version have achieved more or less the same speeds during overclocking. The 1800 is a pretty decent chip for OC. Cooling is the number 1 rub, I had 8 case fans and a huge CPU cooler when I started, wasn't enough. My CPU temp reached 60C at 2000 MHZ on air, so I built a homemade water cooling system and pushed it to 2200 MHZ (38C load). Read the two websites forums, they both will push you in the right direction as how to do it. Small changes at a time are the way to go, no two CPU's are built identically. I should know, as I worked at AMD's Fab 25..

  4. Ducatti- really m8? Work for AMD- gd 1 man, of course if you said you worked for intel i would have to kill you, but AMD is my friend
it should also be noted that some of the palomino processors are locked, meaning you can overclock them without unlucking them. futuremark has details as to how you can unliock them, it involved shorting some bridges on the cpu & joining others!

also, the stepping (eg manufdacturers serial number) plays a HUGE part on how overclcokable a cpu is! if its a newish cpu chances are it will oc well. Here an example:

i had a Barton 2500+ processor, running at a clock speed of 1.8GHz. I overclcoked it on STOCK voltages (no cpu voltage increase--> vvv little increase in heat output) to 2.2GHz, faster than a 3200+!!!! i had 1 fan on my Heatsink and one fan on my PSU and it ran at under 50 full load! i was lucky, i got a a chip with gd stepping. since then i gave it to a m8 who has got it to 2.5GHz with better cooling, but he is moving to watercooling v soon, at which point he will break the 2.6GHz no probs!

i have herd of other barton 2500+ struggling to go above 2.0GHz, even with huge cpu voltage increases, so, in short, its all about the
    1) stepping
    2) cooling

Don't work for AMD, I worked at AMD Fab 25... I work for a semiconductor equipment vendor.. so have first hand knowledge as to why a CPU is overclockable or not...

You are right, it tends to be the later "rev" chips in the family line. That is due to process refinements during the actual "construction" of the wafers. The longer a chip is on the market, the better it will overclock.. to a degree... certain chips are already at their max capacity, and will not be much of an overclocking chip. The XP1700 is on it's way to legendary...

  6. yeah, the 1700+ week 13 kicks ass, 2.2GHz no probs with v little increase in voltage, applying todays 3000+ technology to a slow chip, its more cost efficient to use the same sort of technology.

similar thing to the 2500+ and 3000+, they are almost exactly the same, i suspect the 3000+ has slightly lower tolerences, meaning it is slightly more overclockable.

the only problem with the 2500+ is that the stepping seems to be a little less predictable than the 1700+, i know 3 guys who have exactly the same chip & stepping, one has hit way over 2.7GHz, whereas the other two are pretty standard!

i think the general trend is that mpmw is good, AXQEA is the newest, and also the smaller the number on the first line the better!
