  1. Im trying to convert some SVCD's into Divx files to save space. Ive been trying to use virtual dub. I followed the guide but, when I would convert the stuff, even though I didnt resize it i noticed it was a lot smaller and the quality was a lot less. So, I checked and VirtualDub showed the file as being 480x480 while Windows Media Player showed it as being 640x480. So, i guess my question is, how do i convert the stuff and still keep the aspect ratio?

    Thanks!

    Try TMPGEnc.

    1. Open TMPGEnc and close the wizard if it opens.

    2. Load your video.

    3. Open Settings-->Advanced tab-->Video Arrange Method: Full Screen (Keep aspect ratio).

    4. Selct "OK".

    5. Select File-->Output to file--AVI.

    6. Select Video setting: your DivX codec, name your file. Select "Save"
    Hello.

With this type of conversion the quality will definitely suck. What's the original look like?

  4. The original is very nice quality. Problem is it takes up so much space on both my HD and the dvd-r's. Thanks for the help. =)

  5. You do realize that another conversion will reduce quality?

Also that it won't play in a DVD Player??

Since you mentioned DVD Rs why not make it as DVD and be done with it. You should be able to get 6 to 7 (700 to 800Meg) SVCD onto one DVD blank.

My DVD player plays em without cobnversion, I just use DVD Patcher to patch to 720 by 480...

Add them to TMPGenc DVD author program, Save my project, Unpatch back to SVCD 480 by 480, Open my project back up, Edit, Cut, Make menu(s), and Creat the DVD. Burn it with Nero and done.

    Good Luck

Stop criticizing and just answer his question. Anyone who has spent any time inside TMPGEnc knows you encode all the way up to DVD settings and save to DivX just by using the installed templates or get even more from Kwag.

    Another method ...

Run the SVCD MPEG-2 file through DVD2AVI which will give you a D2V project file and an audio file. You can now process the D2V using GORDIAN KNOT which is probably the BEST program to use when creating a DivX (it now also works with Xvid). You can find an excellent guide on how to use GORDIAN KNOT on the doom9 website.

You will find that GORDIAN KNOT will help you with proper resizing and estimation of bitrate and blah blah blah ... it's a great tool

    P.S.
A good quality SVCD should translate rather well to DivX or Xvid.

using vcdeasy you can convert the .dat file to mpg, this takes about 3 mins

It was not obvious to me. Sometimes a person can be mean-spirited or critical for so long, what they do seems natural, so they see it as being "obvious". If I can show you the quality of my product after using the DVD template settings and saving to AVI, you will see why I beg to differ. Anyway, you do what you want.

So now I'm "mean-spirited" and have been for "so long"? Wow, it's amazing what you know from some text in a message!

I was simply pointing out that converting an SVCD mpeg-2 file to a divX AVI will normally result is very poor quality. It especially depends on the original quality of the mpeg-2 file. Multiple conversions always causes a significant reduction of quality.

This was posted in the "Newbie" forum, so I mentioned it to help a newbie. Next time I'll use a different word than "suck" so you won't take offense.
