HELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!
I have been trying to convert a couple of avi's to mpeg for burning to VCD/SVCD over the last few months without success. I am able to convert the movie and they play fine on my computers (Mac and PC) as mpegs, but when burned to disk shows a horizontal shaky video on my 2 DVD players (both Daewoos). I have scoured the forums without much enlightenment on the problem. Tried conversion with several different settings but they all give the same results:
Attempt 1.
Using ffmpegX 0.0.7c:
Open avi file and designate save as file
select SVCD(NTSC) preset
input the video time
select 2 CD's of 80m mode-2
select NTSC film as framerate
click on "calc best"
Under options tab, no changes (set 3:2, altivec, Bicubic, letterbox, Quicktime decode all selected)
hit encode
Attempt 2.
Same as above, except deselect 3:2 (still don't understand what this does and how best to use it dispite reading about it in the forums)
Attempt 3.
Doctored the avi with DivX Doctor 2.1 then used the resulting .mov file. Kept the same settings as in attempt 1.
Attempt 4 & 5.
Same as attempt 1 & 3, except used mplayer decode instead of Quicktime.
The 3 avi are encoded with 3ivx D4 version 4.0.3 codec and mpeg layer-3 audio, stereo 48 kHz, 16 bits, with a frame rate of 23.98, data rate 113.2 K/s, size of 640 x 272
I have converted avi's encoded with this codec before great resupts before, so I'm not sure what's going on.Anyone with any recommendations for a solution to this problem?

Neo’s Guide to Creating SVCD’s That Will Play on DVD
Players That Will Only Play VCD’s
We need to start of by getting and installing the required software, there are all kinds of app’s out there but this is my how to and this is what works the best for me on a regular basis. (Available on my FTP site E-mail me back if you want access)
Virtual Dub (for editing AVI’s)
DVD2SVCD (for encoding AVI’s)
Cinema Craft Encoder (used by DVD2SVCD)
Win DVD (for testing)
TMPGEnc (for applying header trick)
VCD Easy (for authoring)
Alcohol 120 (for burning)
Virtual Dub
Ok so we have AVI files that we have downloaded from KaZaa etc. that are about 600 to 800 MB. We need to start by scanning the AVI for errors we do this with Virtual Dub under the Video tab. Next after that assuming the file is ok we can crop off the opening frames that are a waste of space and the end credits if you wish (waste of space to me but some people care who actually directed this shit).
After we decide what we are going to keep we can save out what we need. Make sure that the video tab has a mark beside direct stream copy. Double check audio for the same and ensure that there is a mark beside AVI as well. Now at the bottom of the applet window you will a set of tools the last of witch are the set buttons for marking of where we want to save. For example a 750mb file may be 1.5 hours and have 130,000.00 or so frames we want to cut this movie in half so we can fit them onto two disks. (Confused yet? You will be!) So we have picked a spot near the first of the film where the good stuff starts and leaves out all the crappy stuff Great! Now we have to get there by GOP (group of picture). To do this drag the slider all the way to the left this time before you try and move the slider hold the shift key. This moves it in GOP frames when you get close to where you where you decided to start the movie release the shift key and hit either the second last key in the program applet of you can use your Home key on your keyboard. (You are wondering why we can only get close to the original point we selected this is because frames are grouped and to play smoothly on our TV’s we need to ensure that we start and end each part with a GOP. Now that we have the start we need an end to again hold the shift key and drag the slider to about half 130,000.00 / 2 = 65,000.00 easy. When we get close to half (remember we are searching by GOP so it tells us exactly where we can stop) release the shift key and hit the last key in the applet window or we can use our End key on our keyboard. A blue line should now appear that tells us we did it right and that is the part that is going to be saved. Ready to save part one ~ so we go to the file tab top left of the applet and choose save as avi. Choose your new file name {movie part 1 of 2} and save to where ever you want. Now just do the same things again to the next part this time start the movie a few GOP’s back from where we ended the last part to allow for transition between the two. That is the end of the hard stuff now for the easy stuff.
DVD2SVCD
Open DVD2SVCD yes I realize that we are not going from DVD but this sweet tool has the option to select AVI as input format and MPEG2 (SVCD) as output method.
So now with it open Choose the Misc. tab this will allow you to pick AVI as input and MPEG 2 as output. Then choose the Conversion tab here we add the first part of our new AVI file {movie part 1 of2}. Now we get a notice that an encoder is not installed that’s cool we just need to show where we installed it to. It is very simple just go to the Encoder tab in the DVD2SVCD applet and choose Cinema Craft Encoder and use the first browse line to find where it is installed. Choose multipass vbr 4 passes as encoding format. Next we choose a folder to save our new creation (be sure to pick a hard drive with 4-5 gigs of extra space to store all the extra files that this process creates. Don’t worry we will delete those files later. Ok so now we have conversion tab and encoder tab down next we move on to CD Image tab choose all defaults but make sure that VCDXBuild is marked. Next we create a folder on the C: or D: drives (which ever drive has the room to hold the temp files) call it what ever you want I call mine SVCD temp now inside that folder create another folder called SVCD temp 2. Tell you why in a couple of minutes if you haven’t figured out why already. Now we just need to point all of our new files to that new folder we created starting with Audio tab there is a line for save in folder browse to the new folder SVCD temp not temp 2. Back to the Encoder tab choose the same folder SVCD temp as save in folder and move to Pulldown Tab again choose SVCD temp the same for bbMpeg and CD image tabs.
Ready to encode (note this program works great for a couple of reasons one of which is that it uses a lot of power to perform the tasks so my suggestion is to set this up before bed and let it run). Good morning we wake up and look in our new folder and walla first part of our movie and a whole bunch of other stuff we can delete later. Now comes the reason for that second folder you should see it rate there amongst the others SVCD temp 2 if you don’t right click an empty area and choose new folder and make it. Now move everything in that folder to SVCD temp 2 folder why you ask so when we run the second part (for me when I go to work I set up the second half and let it run all day) it doesn’t over write any files needed for the first one. Welcome back how was your day? Now we have two folders full of stuff when all we are looking for is just two files you will know them because they are the two muxed mpeg2 files. Just rename them to Movie part 1of 2 old yes old because we are not done yet we still need to check them.
Win DVD
Just open the file and simply check them out.
TMPGEncoder
We use this tool to do what is called a header trick you may not have to if your DVD player will play SVCD’s but like many others I bought a $100.00 jobby that will only play VCD’s so we do this simple trick and boom it works like magic. If you are wondering what the difference is between VCD and SVCD it is clear as mud. VCD is an mpeg-1 file and SVCD is an mpeg-2 file. The big difference and it is a big difference is QUALITY. Now I have made both and have seen the light but I suggest you try both for yourselves to see the difference. (We can all use extra coasters.)
Now open TMPGE and close out the wizard that pops up and go to File > Mpeg Tools the first tab is where we want to be it is called Simple Multiplex. Now just browse for the file the one we named Movie 1of 2 old and it will get the audio from the same file. Ok so the top line should say Mpeg2 file all we have to do is change that by opening the drop down menu and choose Mpeg 1 Video CD and change our output file name so just remove the old from the name and walla save it to where ever you want (I usually create a file on my desktop for this) and run it should take anywhere from 3-10 minutes depending on processor and ram speed. Do this for both and we are almost done.
VCDEasy
Now we open VCDEasy we use this tool so we can add chapters so we don’t have to fast forward all the way through the SVCD like a video tape and to create a burnable image file. So it is open and we might have gotten an error message that CDRDAO is turned off do not worry we will a different tool to burn anyway. VideoCD type should be set to VCD 2.0. At the bottom of the program applet we see add files, add the newest file created by TMPGE saved to our desktop and go to chapters tab here we can add as few or as many chapters as we desire. For me I like approx. 10 per disk. To do this is simple just divide 10 into how long the part of the movie is 50 min movie 5 min intervals. Create chapters at 0.05.00.000 then hit the equidistant ok button to apply to closest GOP. Now back to main tab and choose an output folder just use the temp desktop folder from before and hit go button an ISO image is now being created, before we make the second ISO file use the same trick from before and make a folder inside that folder and move the new ISO just created into it.
Alcohol 120
Open alcohol 120 and choose Image burning wizard and load the first ISO file that VCDEasy created choose a low burning speed 4-8 no higher (that’s what works best for me but if you are a real time freak go ahead and try higher speeds We can all use more coasters.) When it is done we should have a SVCD that thinks it is a VCD and will play in our cheaper DVD players. Like I said this is what I use and it has worked for me plenty of times. It’s the fastest about 8-9 hours for full movie and most important the best QUALITY. Yours Truly Neo__001
