Can anyone tell me what they think is the fastest MP3 Encoder around? YOu see, I have like 300 files that need to be converted, so I was wondering which is the program to use.

  4. LAME is the best MP3 encoder. Its fast, and its quality is unmatched. Open source as well. If you don't mind command line programs.

  7. I have tried a few of the above mentioned ones, and until a few weeks ago I used Musicmatch or audiograbber. I was told about a really good proggie to try and have since converted over 800 songs for my 10gig Nomad Jukebox. It is a complete program called Easy CD-DA extractor. You can rip directly from cd's or convert to MP3, WMA, Ogg, etc...

  8. Sounds like CDex. The fastest MP3 encoder used to be from Xing, but it was also the worst quality. To be honest, the speed of your processor is more important than the programme itself. If you use CDex with the LAME plugin, you will have excellent sounding MP3's with very little hassle.

Gogo, and Xing are the fastest, and worse quality encoders.

Depending on the content and desired bitrate Blade, Lame, and the old FHG encoders are the best. FHG being the slowest of the three. The Razor Lame, and Razor Blade GUI's are great.

CDex, Music Match, dbPoweramp, and others are just front ends (GUI) for the actual encoders.

  10. Ask yourself "do I want crap or good sounding MP3 files?" The LAME encoder is the 'best' encoder for converting your MP3s if you want good sound. I personally encode at 192 Kbps to get the best balance of sound/size.

There was a site called R3mix.net that had lots of good information on it in regards to the various encoding engines, but they seem to be down now?

LAME's page at SourceForge can be found at:
    http://lame.sourceforge.net/

As for a frontend, I prefer CDex. Nice simple program, converts between many formats, free, uses the LAME engine for MP3s, etc etc.

  11. Write a .bat for lame. I use --alt-preset extreme for all my files

the script is a little something like this

for %%f in (*.wav) do lame --alt-preset extreme %%f %%f.mp3

Double click it and it will convert all the .wavs in a folder to .mp3s
