Hello all...
I was wondering if anybody could post some info for me on the media codes of some DVD-R disks. There isn't a DVDInfo program for Mac's like you all use in the PC Windows world.
I am using a Superdrive (Pioneer 103/firmware 1.90) and the only disks that I can find that burn at 2x are Apple 2x, and Branded Maxell 2x. I recently purchased some new TDK 2x that, to my surprise burn at 2x!! These are Tiawaneses made from Target (12.99 for a 5 pack). I got "stung" by the Mertline "Maxell true 2x, unbranded" fiasco and am hesitant to buy online, "unbranded" right now.
I have read on these forums that Apple, Maxell and now TDK are all made by Maxell. Could somebody verify this for me if they use the Apple 2x or the TDK 2x DVD-R's.
Thanks in advance for any replys

Cant give you media codes, since I have a mac also, but i also found good luck with the TDK 2x media.
As to if these are made by Maxell, i cant offer anything other than to say I have heard, like you, the Apple DVD-R and TDK have the same media code
if they do for real, who knows. Maybe a pc user can fire up the dvd info app and give the codes for the TDK 2x disks to us. I have the one from teh apple one laying around somewhere from a friend who did them for me. -
hey Galactica!
Thanks for the reply...lol
It figures that another Mac User would be the only one to reply to my message so far. We take care of our own!

The TDK's I bought from Target were made by TDK. They were the 20 packs though.
My A03 is happy with Maxell, Verbatim (MCC), Pioneer, and TDK. Apple's media is OEM'd to Maxell.
Be cautious of the Verbatim, people that purchased recently are reporting that they're made by CMC. I bought mine in bulk, all MCC, and the jewel case ones I have say 2x on the label, while the CMC ones don't. Hypermicro, and Rima carry the Mitsubishi ones, haven't tried other vendors.
If you mac guys can update to the 2.00 firmware, the BeAll 4x will burn without problems at 2x. It's currently $2 at Meritline. The Prime 4x also burn at 2x. The Accu's will not burn at 2x.
I took my drive to a pioneer tech to have the laser recalibrated. It burnt 2 out of 6 Accu's at 2x. The others errored out with Power Calibration errors.
The Optodisc 4x does 2x also. I had a problem at first attempting to get the Opto's to burn at 2x, but it was a Windows error, not a drive error (Intel's application accelerator changed the bios settings). Rima has these for $1.50.
The 1.90 firmware only allows 1x burning with the 4x media though.
Let me know what media ID's you need, and I'll post them, along with the TDK's I have. -
Here is the media code for the TDK 2x media I picked up from Target:
00 42 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 50 00 02 98 0C 13 .B...@....P.....
76 78 80 00 03 54 44 4B 47 30 32 00 04 30 30 30 vx...TDKG02..000
30 30 30 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 000.............
enjoy! -
Thanks for the reply disturbed...
I'm not sure that the 2.0 update is available for the Mac platform...and I'm not about to try and hack flash my drive. Thanks for the info on the media codes. My 103 is also happy with Apple, TDK, and Maxell all burn at 2x. Just got a 100pk of the TDK 2x at BB for $189.00. They burn at 2x like the ones from target so I assume they are the same media code.
so the Codes I need are for:
TDK 2x from Target
TDK 2x from Best Buy
Thanks again
