hi -i have downloaded the "sample" svcd to dvd ntsc and burnt the VIDEO_TS with my burning program.everything went great-played on pc and played on my sony slv-d300p stand alone player-no problem at all.my sony can play cd-r,dvd-r,dvd+r formats.have also used plain vcd and svcd cd's before converting them ,with no problems.except when i recently tried converting a vcd to dvd.used isobuster to get the .mpg and followed all the guides instruction on doing this.next started svcd2dvdmpg+ and use this guide step by step to get the VIDEO_TS vob files.everything is going just find, then i used recordnowmax as the burning program, burnt the dvd as a successful burn.went to check the finished product with powerdvd, and played fine, but when i tried on my stand alone-it stated error check tv system?if the "sample" svcd to dvd works on my stand alone then why would'nt my vcd to dvd.am i missing something or is something wrong with the conversion attempt?any suggestions would surely be appreciated.please anything.

Are you sure that the SVCD was NTSC?
A lot of DVD players play PAL VCD's or SVCD, but NOT PAL DVD or DVD-SVCD.

is there a program that can check the vcd or svcd cd to see whether it's PAL or NSTC,i know the the USA uses ntsc standard, maybe my vcd or svcd is in a PAL standard.if i could check what country it's from i could then try to convert it to the nstc style and then try converting it to dvd?
what do you think
thanks

I have found that 75% or more of the SVCD's I have... acquired... lately have been PAL.

thanks for your help gurm, i finally figured it out,i had to convert the vcd to ntsc then did the rest of the steps-played on my dvd player
the quality was'nt what i expected being on a dvd disk, would tmpge nc give you a better looking dvd picture through some of its setting?
thanks again

No no.
It's a VCD.
This program (SVCD2DVDMPG+) merely puts these videos onto one DVD as a CONVENIENCE... not to improve quality.
In fact, many players play these videos WORSE on a DVD, since they aren't expecting VCD or SVCD resolution in DVD mode.
If I had a PAL VCD (320x300 or whatever), I think I'd probably UPSAMPLE it to 352x480, which is medium-resolution for DVD's, instead of DOWNsampling it to NTSC VCD. But that's just me.

hey gurm,i'm confused-i truly thought that if you converted vcd/svcd to a dvd, that the quality of the video would be like a dvd movie?if its not ,what would be the reason for putting it on a dvd disk.would it be-just to get several svcd/vcd's on it because of its size of the dvd disk capacity?truly if it don't change the video quality, and you're able to view vcd/svcd on your stand-alone-it's not worth it.what do you think?
thanks

It is JUST the convenience factor... that and you can add chapters, which is ALSO a convenience.
That's it.
No extra quality.
Nothing.
You can use TMPGEnc (or something similar) to upsample the movie, but it won't get any nicer looking. It'll just take up more disc space.
People use this program for one reason alone - to put their movies onto a single disc.
A lot of people use it for TV episodes - you can put 10 episodes of a popular show on one DVD, and they are often shipped around the Internet as VCD's.
