These new models of JVC DVD players are not listed in the compatability data base:
JVC XVF 80 (BLACK)
JVC XVF 85 (GOLD)
JVC XVFA 90 (BLACK)
JVC XVFA 95 (GOLD)
These are all 7 DISC CHANGERS and play CD R/CD RW and MP3 DISCS! I am very interested if anyone has tested any of these for VCD/SVCD compatability? Does anyone own these yet?
Thanks
Check them out at crutchfield.com:

Someone must have gotten one of these by now?!?!?! I'm about ready to order one but I want to make sure it can do everything first (SVCD). Does it use the same chipset as other JVC models that could be used for comparison?
Thanks

I just got back from Best Buy. They had the JVC XVFA-95 on the floor. Of course it was not hooked up to a TV, so I could not test various discs (i.e. VCD, SVCD). I was curious about the changer mechanism. It seems to work very well as it cycles through the discs. When open, only two discs are exposed at once. When you hit the cycle button, the changer rotates and exposes the next two.
I did not find out about which particular JVC chipset was used in this unit. Though, I did find a more detailed information page on Crutchfield's website:

It states that it plays VCDs, both production and CDR discs. We need to find out about SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, etc. MP3 seems limited, as you cannot do a programed or random playback. Burned VCD and MP3 discs also only playback with CDR format, not CDRW. Apparently, only Audio CDs can use CDRWs with this machine. I think the Goodguys are better for testing out the actual formats in person. I will try and bring some discs there when I get a chance.
DVD, DVD Audio, VCD, MP3, CD, Progressive scan for $379, it looks like a good one.

I just got back from CktCity and they didn't have theirs hooked up either.
The changer mechanism is pretty cool, there are basically two layers. When you open it up, two discs come to the top layer. There are a lot more moving peices than in a regular platter style changer, so I would think it is definitely has more potential for mechanical problems.
Any other progressive scan, mp3, cdr, vcd, dvd changers out there???

Well, I'll try to help you. If you make VCDs with files that are compliant with white book standards, than JVC players are one of the finest DVD players out there. They play noncompliant homemade VCDs ok, but eventually, the player will pause at any given moment while playing for up to 30 seconds than it will continue. But if the compliance is there on your disc, go for the JVCs. Otherwise, you're going to be hunting for a long time. Some notable DVD players that will play these disc that are not compliant are Curtis Mathes CMD5000(very good), DAEWOO 3000n(good), and Apex 500w (good at times).

As far as other Progressive Scan changers, I have always considered the Pioneer DVC-603. It is a Progressive scan, 5 disc changer that plays EVERYTHING except MP3. So this was my top contender until the JVC.
After reading some of these replies it sounds like the JVC might not play SVCD or XVCD. I may just wait for the next round of Pioneer Changers to come out since their new single disc machines now play MP3 Cds and continue to play everything under the sun. I have a Pioneer DV 525 and I love it! It plays everything except MP3. The creating of VCDs and SVCDs have spurred me on to get a changer. Progressive scan would be a plus since I plan to get a HDTV in the next year.
Let me know if there are any other Changers out that play all of the current formats (DVD, CDR, MP3, VCD, SVCD, X(s)VCD).
Thanks. -
"After reading some of these replies it sounds like the JVC might not play SVCD or XVCD."
It will play homemade VCDs that are compliant without any problems. It's not difficult to make files compliant. It takes about one minute by setting the template to "VCD (nonstandard) using TMPGEnc Multiplex. -
So you re-encode any non-compliant mpg (i.e. SVCD, XVCD, etc.) to compliant VCD standard. Then you burn a standard VCD as usual. That is fine, but you would still lose the quality of SVCD.
These JVC 7 Disc Changers would really shine if they played SVCDs especially when you would need 4 or more discs to get one movie in the player. -

not true on the XVCDs - i've got the JVC 523GD and it plays all of my XVCDs, VBR up to 2500kbps, rez up to 720x480. will not play any SVCDs i've created... -
That is good to hear. Do we know if the JVC 523GD uses the same chip set as the JVC XVF 80/85/90/95?

"After reading some of these replies it sounds like the JVC might not play SVCD or XVCD."
hitechjunkie, I know you meant to respond to the quote. But for the record, and eventhough it's obvious from this thread, I did not make this statement. -
Just to clear up, Erwin's statement of "They play noncompliant homemade VCDs ok, but eventually, the player will pause at any given moment while playing for up to 30 seconds than it will continue.", led me to state, "After reading some of these replies it sounds like the JVC might not play SVCD or XVCD."
Basically, I interpreted this as other JVC units do not play off standard disc well. To me if it does not play them well, I would never use the unit for said formats. Thus, it does not play them (to me).
Sorry for the confusion. Overall, there has been some really good info here.
