I recently got a Pioneer DVR-104 and I am trying to use Sonic Foundry's DVD Architect to burn to a DVD-R. The program get stuck while "Receiving Media Info..." and the DVD Drive seems like it is having trouble reading the disk. The computer I installed it on did not come with a dvd reader so I was wonder if the reason it isn't reading it is because there is no DVD Decoder. If you think this is the case, are there any decoders for free? The drive was OEM so I didn't get any software or manuals with it however I did read the manuel on pioneers web site. Thanks for providing this help.

No you should be ok. I'm not familar with DVD Architect it's just another program to author (and it appears burn) DVDR discs.
'DVD Reader' if you have a DVD-ROM/DVDRW drive it can read DVDsHowever to play video DVDs you need a software DVD player. There are several choices (look under tools to the left) encluding a few freeware ones.
A little more info would be nice thou. It sounds like you are trying to author and burn a home movie onto DVDR and Architect is locking up??? What's your video source, how did you encode it, settings, can you generate a VIDEO_TS folder on your HD and play that (prior to attempting to burn)? -
Thanks for your reply. Your right, I am trying to burn some video of an event I shot will a JVC Mini DV camera and edited with Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 4.0. I designed my DVD in DVD Architect and it created a TS_Video and TS_Audio folder on my HD. I thought I was decoder problem becuase the drive will not read any DVD disk but I was wrong becuase I blew 15 bucks on a decoder pack from National Semi Conductor. The drive specs say it can play DVD-Video. I put a any DVD in there (blank or not) and the drives make interesting noises and then gives up. Windows thinks there is no disk in the drive. I have a more detailed error that DVDA gives me (Its a bit lenghthy so I will post it below) Thanks again for your help.
P.S. What is a DVD decoder for, anyway?
