Hi,
I have a Cyberhome ADL 528 player.
If I play VCD or SVCD(100 % standard) on it, I will see every 1 till 5 minutes a very short jerk.
My movies are encoded with TMPG and CCE . I always demux and mux my files before burning to cd.
On PC there (WinDVD) are no jerks.
If I play the VCDs on my Philips CDi 450 Player
there are no jerks too, only on my DVD-Player.
Has anybody an idea, what causes this jerks.
Is it the DVD-player or is it a bad encoded file?

P.S.
I watched my movies carefully. Those jerks occur sometimes shortly after a scene change, never in high motion, often in slow motion.
I am not sure 100%, but only VCDs and SVCDs from ripped DVDs show this behavior.
Encoded AVIs from TV are "jerkfree". -
I have this problem too, am still experimenting to try to solve it. It occurs for me at occasional scene changes only.
Sony DVP725.

Exactly the same here. I have a Labway LB900.
After upgrading with new firmware the problem has reduced but is still there with some VCDs. -
Cyberhome, Labway - of course. CRAP with ESS chipset. These pieces of shit cannot play about 1/3 disks correctly. Some DVD's freeze whole thing.
There is only one solution - DO NOT BUY THESE PIECES OF SHIT ! This is absolute low-end, specially in quality.
Thank to ESS for their great chipset ! -
Maybe the jerks....
Are the PEOPLE playing the movies. HAhahahahhahhhhaaaaa.... There fore the only way to get rid of the jerks is to have someone else watch the movie!!!
Sorry people, with all due respect I couldn't resist.

More info....
The jerks are due to repeated frames either immediately before or immediately after a scene change. I have verified this by recording onto tape. The weird part is that if you play the vcd in slow motion it doesn't occur, so it might be some weird buffering problem on the players, or can anyone else shed some light onto this?
-
slight update - this problem does not seem to appear when forcing my Sony725 to play svcd .... only problem now is that the player has to be tricked into playing svcd (see other postings in this forum about how to do this) and refuses to ff/rr correctly - video corruption happens when I try this.
-
I also had this problem when I play a still image slideshow with background music (VCD2.0). During the picture changes, sometime (it is random) I can hear the music jerk. I gess it is due to the slow processor.
-
may not be related but....
what prog are you using to burn the cds. I have problems on one of my stand alone players when burning with nero 5.5.
This jerk happens every three seconds or so but only on ripped files and the video is bouncy on the screen. When played on my other stand alones and pc the files play fine. I reverted back to NERO 5.0 and the vcds play fine. By the way I have tested most versions of nero and even the new update 5.564 does this. I have discovered that I could install 5.5 and then install version 5.0 into a different folder and they both seem to work OK. There are a lot of other bugs using version 5.0 so this is a good compromise.

nero is a buggy software and I do not suggest you use it for (S)VCDs.

I have exactly the same problem. I bought a Cyberhome 528 DVD player in December as it is a real "anoraks" machine with its own "crack" site on the web @ http://www.cyberhome-help.de and a cheap and easily replaced PC DVD ROM drive. However, I have also noticed the "jerking" on pictures encoded with TMPGenc - no matter how many times and all the different programs I use to re-mux the file.
One thing I did notice is that DVD rips aren't nearly as bad as straight MPEG encodes through TMPEGenc, but that direct MPEG1 captures using my ATI AIW card are perfect! I am beginning to think that its something to do with TMPGenc and the decoding inside of the Cyberhome player.
Anyone any ideas????? -
Well???
Come on, there must be some other Cyberhome owners out there! -
no i don't believe its anything to do with tmpgenc because viewing the CD on a PC works perfectly, no frame holding.
I think I should emphasise that i believe it to be frame holding by my Sony for some unknown reason. The data is definately there (because the frame exists why playing it on a PC from the same cd), & I also don't believe its a processing time problem as it often occurs during at times when the bitrate is way less than maximum. It might be worth the effort to capture the hold from tape so that we can all compare the effect to see if we're talking about the same thing ?
Even though I don't believe its tmpengc's problem , I am willing to try a re-encode using a different encoder. I'll post the results after the weekend. -
Keep me posted! You can always get me at ... studio@energy80s.com
It's a pity that this machine is suffering like this, otherwise it's a great bargain for the price. I have used other (more expensive) DVD players and they're nowhere near as good as the Cyberhome one. Hopefully we can sort out a fix. -
Sorry to say that my finding have shown that TMPPGEnc is the link to my problems, I'm not sure for the rest of the ppl here as we haven't discussed what encoder we're all using.
Suffice to say that I encoded the same excerpt of film over & over using all sorts of settings for tmpgenc, and they all suffered this problem. In my test film of 1min30sec, there were 2 distinct & reproducible places where this hold occurred. However, I did the same chunk using DVDx and it works fine.
Next problem? DVDx is nowhere near tmpgenc's quality, especially in motion scenes. I might try bbmpeg, but I am determined to try to find what I need to do with tmpgenc to get my Sony to behave properly. -
Solved!
For my player at least....
I tried bbmpeg and it too doesn't suffer from this problem on my player. I then set about comparing working clips from DVDx & bbmpeg to non-working clips from tmpgenc.
The problem is that I've been using the default "Detect Scene change" option on the GOP structure dialog, which improves the quality of the film by breaking the GOP sequence at scene changes and starting afresh with an I frame there. It appears that my Sony (and possibly other players) don't like the sequence to be broken, and expect it to be regular.
Turning this option off means that the sequence doesn't get broken and my player is now playing without those occasional holds! Cool!
The quality doesn't seem to have suffered in the slightest, frame by frame stepping through with virtualdub reveals no significant quality changes by turning this off. -
Thank You
I am going to try this.
I will report You the result.
Bye

Well, I have tried this and it still jumps when played back in my Cyberhome 528 player, in fact I think it's even worse than before. I think I'll have to try a different MPEG1 encoder.
-
I am having the same problem with my Cyberhome 528. I was wondering....
Saying that Tmpgenc is so powerful, could ypu use a 3rd party mpeg 1 plugin to encode the movie, hopefully fixing the slight jerking problem every few minutes....... -
I've got the same problem with my toshiba 4700. It is not nero (or shouldn't be, as "other people's" (s)vcds play fine. I am going to try that scene change thing (sounds good, except for the fact that I've been trying to encode star wars eps 4 and the problem starts right off the bat in the credits, but there is a scene change there of sorts.... we'll see!)
My other suggestion/guess is this: if you are using VBR try using CBR or set a minimum vbr. I believe i read this somewhere, but can't find it again...
worth a shot on a 90s test file and a cdrw, no? -
this player is fine but no way as good as the older 512... serious jerking probs with svcds!! NTSC is screwed up on occassions & xvcd's made with sefy's templates play in half screen mode... For 100 quid though can we complain (yes) lol. Nah this is a canny player for what U pay for atleast it plays svcd's I have an xwave lb9000 and its crap so it sits under the bed gathering dust. There are 2 players I thought were mint! one my old alba dvd 103 which played anything U shoved in it & my eclipse dvd695.. Shame none of them are available now. I really feel sorry for all these people that bought the cyberhome adl528 but my mother aint comp-lained, she was more pissed at the ghosting from the scart socket than a few jerks.
Kev! -
BTW it has nothing to do with nero, tmpeg or media U use this player just has a few probs thats all..
