I have been waiting to purchase DVD writer until a new generation of lower cost ones came out, also hoping that they would be more stable.
I read forums here and understand that the -R format is less expensive, but that now the +R was getting lower in price.

Well I saw what I thought was a GREAT buy on a Iomega DVD writer for $140.00 It used +R.

Then I did a search on bland DVD media to check pricing. First I noticed that some of the places didn't even have +R listed, only -R. Then when I did see +R, the cost seemed considerably higher thant the -R.

Now I'm thinking that I will either get a -R or one that will write to + or - R.

What are your thoughts about this ?

  2. cheer up! +R prices are getting better and you can find them at more and more places.

A couple of weeks ago, Office Depot has a buy 1, get one free on 15 DVD spindles of Verbatim.

That works out to $1 per disk.
I saw a 5 pack of Memorex in jewel case at Wal-Mart last night for $12, that's a little over $2 per disk.

Certainly, if you want to hedge your bets, you can buy a burner that does both.

I own a +R burner and have been a little steamed up until now becuase of price and availability. When I started out, all you could get was +RW for $19.95 a piece!

When the +R Media came out, it was around $12.95 each. I was scared, imagin making $12 coasters!

But at $1 each, I'm not so worried any more. I expect the prices to continue to drop. Keep your eye on the advertisements in the Sunday paper.
Just what is this reality thing anyway?

    Hey Dave, excellent post.

I will check, but I do not want to spend and won't spend $300 for a dual format reader.

I figured when I could get a 4x for about $150, I was going to move. But I didn't buy when I scanned the web looking for +R media.

The cost of the unit is important of course, but if the media is very high, then that negates the cost of the unit.

I have been disapointed with how few new DVD writers are on the market. It must be because of format issues or that ******** from the MIAA hastling them about building in copy protection.

That is really good to know.

I am soooo glad that you mentioned without rebate. More and more stores like best-buy, staples, circuit city, and the worst offender of all, Compusa never have sales !! They just have stinking rebate offers and quote the rebate price, not the real price.

For me, the price of a product is what I pay for it at the cashier, not the rebate price !!

  6. DVD media is pretty cheap now if you factor the amount of data on a dvd is around 6-7 cd-r's worth of junk.. Factor in a little bit more per a disk just for the easy nature of dumping 4+ gigs at one time it is pretty cheap right now and pretty darn close to the cost of cd-r

yeah, yeah yeah, I know some cd-r are to the point of being free due to rebates but I'm going off my lazy costco buys of TDk in a 100 packs with a rebate..

as for DVD media, if your looking to skip ordering online one can pick up (at least around my area of Sacramento) 25 packs of 2x -r TDK at best buy for $50 and of course the 100 of x4 +r or x2 -r TDK for $189... That is just right at $2 per a disk with next to zero effort needed to pick it up.

Even Target has dvdr + / - too but at 10 TDK for $25 that is a bit more but my point is that if they are well under $3 per a disk in Target and Bestbuy, it can only go down in cost from here. So this is a great time to buy a DVDr.. Heck just talking about getting one for myself made two of my friends run out and pick up pioneer a05 too. heh.. I should get a kick back from avlogic.com! heh

Get a NEC 1300A, price about $230 and you can use what ever disc you want when the cost of disc is right for you, with DUAL format writer, their is nothing to worry about. Come think about it, even pionner's new A06 is a DUAL format drive.

I didn't know that the Pioneer was dual mode. I have a Pioneer 106S as a DVD reader and I like it a lot.

The NEC also sounds very interesting.

Would you say that more and more DVD writers will be dual format ?

    Thanks for your contribution.

My understanding is that both Pionner and NEC use the same NEC chipset for their new DUAL mode DVD writer, and SANYO is coming out with another model that support both DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW and even DVD+RAM also HD-Burn, and even TDK had announce their DUAL format drive earlier.
as you can see, the Dual format will be the trend untill bluelaser technology become popular (i guess)
