  1. Oh goodie, just what you guys need, another person bugging you about what to buy. Ok here i what i would like:

    CDR/RW, DVD-/+R, DVD-/+RW, S/VCD, XVCD, XSVCD, MP3, and under $80.

The reason i didnt do a search was because there were many conflicting reviews. I would like to know what would be a good buy that will work according to most people.

I don't have one but I've heard good things about the SAMPO 612(N)
According to the AREA 450 website this player is very compatable with all kinds of media including VCD, SVCD, DVD-R, DVD+R etc. It also can be made region free (very simple to do) and has the ability to play back PAL DVD discs and convert them to NTSC (and does NOT screw up the aspect ratio like most).

I heard you can find it as low as $70 but I've seen it as high as $130

Please be advised that the 612 model is not the same as the 612(N)
    You would want the 612(N)

  6. Go with a Philips DVD724. It plays everything, has progressive scan output, and can be picked up at Wal-Mart for about $110.

  8. apex1110, walmart $40.

It plays vcd,SVCD,CVD (44.1 and 48mhz), XVCd,XSVCD, PAL to NTSC, DVD, DVD-R, and DVD+R. The "only" thing it wont play is divx, but only a handful from what I remember actually will. It also plays native mpeg files.

Unless things have changed again with Apex, they had stopped support of VCD due to licensing issues. The current Walmart site doesn't list VCD on any of the Apex models.

I'm afraid I can only tell you what not to buy. Both my Pioneer DV-343 and GE 5803P players went to early graves. Both started out playing everything and doing a great job. After about 6 - 8 months, both stopped playing DVDs but will still play VCD and SVCD.

I have both a Norcent DP300 and an APEX AD-3201. I recommend the Norcent as it plays CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, MP3 on CD, MP3 on DVD (over 1000 songs), JPEG slide show on data CD, straight MPEG2 files, VCD, SVCD.

Mine has a DSL-710A drive that is also present in a lot of APEX DVD players and I tried myself all the formats above. See the macrovision and region hack on the left side of this page.

Read the forums to get the right serial number for the hacks.
