  1. I am planning to purchase a Canopus ADVC but I cannot decide on the model. What are the advantages of ADVC100 over 50? Does ADVC100 give better DV results ? How do you connect ADVC50 in the Bay of the PC ?

The major difference between the two, capability-wise, is that the ADVC-100 can export DV video back to analog while the ADVC-50 can't. This capability would be useful if you are wanting to import your video, edit it, then export the finished product back to VHS for duplication, but isn't necessary if you're only going to import video for conversion to VCD or DVD-R.

If you mount the ADVC-50 into the 5 1/4" drive bay, then you need to connect power to it (it has the same kind of power connector as a hard drive or CD-ROM) and run a cable from it to your IEEE1394/Firewire card.

  3. Is there any difference in DV quality between 50 and 100 ? What exactly is Macrovision feature ? Is it true one can bypass the feature in 100 but not in 50 ?

  4. From the glossary

    Macrovision
An analog video copy protection scheme that alters the unseen part of a video signal such that a VCR or other macrovision enabled device may not record the video signal properly. There are several types:
    - Automatic Gain Control
    - 2-line color stripe
    - 4-line color stripe

Symptoms of this include picture fading in and out or color banding of the signal.

I don't know if it's true about the 100 disabling the Macrovision, still waiting for mine. From the posts that I have read YES, seems to be the answer. So if you plan on backing up some store bought movies you will most likley need the macro option.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

The ADVC100 will allow you to remove Macrovision by holding dow the "input select" button for about 15-20 seconds. I dont actualy use this feature on it though. I went ahead and purchased a Sima CopyMaster 39$ US to remove Macrovision. I also feel it has truly helped stabilize the signal coming out of my VCR for my crappier VHS tapes although the device isnt really a true TBC. I see noticable results when using the Sima as opposed to not using it.
