  1. I was calling around today, asking local computer retailers if they had any 99 min cd-r's in stock, and one of the stores I called, the guy said i should try burning on a dvd-r using my cd burner. I told him this was impossible, but he claims he did it, and managed to cram 1.2 gig worth of infomation. He claims he made a perfect working redbook audio cd, and then a data cd.

I know this can't be true, the laser's used for the different formats are completely different.

    Any thoughts?

    He's full of crapola.

The lasers are on different wavelengths. The Dyes are different. The CDRW doesn't know how to read the disk ID, so it doesn't know how to calibrate the laser. The stepper motor (that controls the laser head) is settup for CDR tracks, so it's only going to cover the same area as a CDR, so a DVDR is going to have the same burn area as a CDR when burned in a CDRW drive. This means to get 1.2 GB you would have to have (1.2-.89)/.89 or 40% increase in data density over a 99 minute CDR.

He may have gotten something to burn, but it's nonstandard, and won't play in very many players. There are probably some DVDR's that would burn in a CDRW drive, but I don't see how they are recognizing the media.

1.2GB is the density of a double-density CD-R which some Sony drives can burn. They actually cram 1.2GB of data onto a 650MB (or is it 700MB) CD-R. But only Sony drives can read those (other brands may support this, but they are few and I do not know who they are.)

You could probably get more info at Sony if you're interested.

This reminds me of the old joke, "What's the difference between a computer saiesman and a used car salesman?"

ANS: The used car salesman knows that he is lying to you.

OR, those who can, do... those who can't, sell!

or, what's the difference between a computer salesman and a trampoline?

you take your shoes off before you jump up and down on a trampoline.

  6. It does amaze me at the lack of knowlege that some of these muppets have, but then they are probrably getting about £6/hr for shop work, not really much of an incentive.
