Getting ULTRA DMA MODE 5 back?

I've just seen for the first time in probably 7 months, XP change my settings for my secondary channel (which my "DVD ROM" happens to be on) from ULTRA DMA to PIO. I had read this happens kind of frequenty with XP, but It has only happened to me once in the last 7 months. Anyway, obviously because of this change my rip speeds have gone from up to 15.4x down to about 3x!

I've changed ULTRA DMA MODE back and restarted, but now it says ULTRA DMA MODE 2....I am almost positive the high rip speeds were achieved in ULTRA DMA MODE 5.

Can anyone tell me what I can do to get ULTRA DMA MODE "5" back?

There was also some type of program I remember which can be installed, preventing XP from changing back to PIO "unnannounced" so to speak.

That has also happened to me before, and for some reason changing it back to MODE 5 did not fix it. Because when I would restart the computer it would be right back to MODE 2. But the way that I was informed to do it, and it worked the first time, was to delete the IDE Controllers for your DVD-ROM and RESTART. It resets it to MODE 5.

Also check your BIOS settings.

1) Check and make sure that "Plug and Play OS" is set to yes.
2) Check and make sure the UDMA mode (varies with different BIOS's) is set to Auto

Then, when you start back up into Windows try changing it there again.

@bodyslide, I was fortunate that with a simple reboot Mode 5 went back into effect. As the other posters pointed out though, you can simply delete the host controller and reinstall it..that may or may not work. One thing that definitely seems to work is reinstalling your OS...fortunately, I didn't have to go that route this time. I know there was some patch that prevents XP from randomly changing your DMA settings to PIO... but I don't remember where I saw it. I think someone posted a link here.

If anyone remembers where this patch can be D/L'd...please post it.
