  1. basically i realize that capturing video from a mini-dv cam via firewire will require a large amount of hd space (+ editing too). my usual 15G of free space probably won't cut it right. so i'll probably need to buy a new hd. how big should i get?

i'll be working w/ concerts that i'll film which typically ranges from 30min - 2 hrs (very rare though)

DV is roughly 13GB per hour. Then you will need some space for convert to mpeg on authoring, etc. 60 to 80 GB is pretty good, but whatever you can afford. You will want an editor that has a good encoder or at least will frameserve out to a good encoder.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

  3. Go for a 120GB drive, they are cheap enough these days.

  4. I just got 2 120GB drives from BestBuy, it was basically a 2 for 1 special they are running. Reg price was $139, $69.99 after rebates for one HD. I needed 2 because I'm running a stripped RAID, and having the 245GB available is nice, since I capture in uncompressed AVI.

At high res(full D1) I have enough room to capture 3 hours of uncompressed, and 6 hours half res(half D1).

Right now, drive space and RAM seem to be cheap, so load up with as much as you can afford.

One important thing to remember is that if your capture is lets say 10G, you will effectively need another 10G to render it.

Remember that you may want to work on different projects simultaneously.
