  1. The avi file i have is 718488kb
    cbr standard ntsc
    non interlaced
    1:1 vga
    video movie
    2 pass vbr
I have tmpge set at 1600 bit rate
    at 480*480 resolution.

The movie should be approx 1 hour 15 minutes.
    480*480 29.97fps / 44100Hz stereo / 254 min 04 sec
tmpge is telling me that it needs 3373.65mb =+/- 5 disks actually 463.4% or disk space.

how do i make it smaller.... thanks for the help for a newbie
I used to be on top of all this stuff.. get out of college for a few years and suddenly i am lost like my parents used to be

Reduce the resolution, or reduce the bit rate (my suggestion).

  3. How low can i go with the resolution and bit rate and still have decent quality. It seems like its going to take me forever to have my puter do the conversions on these, so i'd like to get some basic idea so i am not just shooting in the dark.

The computer i am using is a celeron 1.7 with 128 mb ddr ram. how long should it take to process an average sized (700 mb) avi file?

You can go to 352 x 240 with acceptable video, depending what standards you are willing to accept. Also, a little trial and error never hurt. So encode a sample to a rewriteabl, and see how it looks to you. Repeat until you get the quality and size you want.

Since your movie is only 1 hour and 15 minutes, you should be able to get it on a SVCD with a little tweaking, but definitely get it on a standard VCD with no problems.

Depends on what program and what settings. With my AMD 2000+ it takes about 4-5 hours in TMPGEnc in the one pass modes 10-11 in 2-pass mode.

You could try converting your fram rate to 23.976 instead of 29.97 fps

  6. ok
    thanks

I am attempting one at 1600kb/s with the lowere resolution and slower frame speed and it still is going to be 3-4 disks... oh well

Any other area to trim in?
