  1. Pardon my frustration, but I find the whole Tmpgenc experience annoyingly arcane. Their web site is sparse in information. There is no documentation to speak of. There are numerous guides with varying opinions and instructions on how to get it to work.

I have accepted that this is one of the better tools around, despite these inconviences. My downloaded copy says that the MPEG2 encoding has expired. I go to the web site and I don't see the encoder for sale. I don't see Tmpgenc for sale. I see Tmpgenc PLUS for sale. What do I need to buy to get this working?!?!? I don't want to cheat anyone or steal anything, but using this program has been exasperating: I have to even research how to BUY it!

    Any help, please?

TMPGEncPLUS is the reg copy, they will give you a reg # for your 48.00. I assume from your post you are talking about the encoder and not the authoring software. I hate to say it but DUDE it's not that hard.

  3. Giving them a charge card isn't hard. After a weekend of having NOTHING work right in my vhs to dvd project, the encoder expired. When I went looking for the encoder, I could not find it. Further, Tmpgenc never said anything about having to switch to Tmpgenc PLUS to get the same functionality -- I didn't know if it was the same program and I didn't need any more (or different) functionality than I was already getting. I eventually found the info, after pecking around on the Pegasys web site. It's there, but it's definitely the most camouflaged product I ever tried to purchase. Thanks for the info!

  4. I, too, have found the "tmpgenc experience" to be quite challenging. I also agree that their web page does need some editing. It jumps between www.tmpgenc.net, www.tmpgenc.com, and www.pegasys-inc.com. Very unprofessional. Oh, and the free version was kinda hidden.

Oh, as far as the trial period goes....I downloaded DVD Author Trial and the tmpgenc free version. Well, the mpeg2 portion of the free version expired before I even had a chance to encode something with it because I'm so busy trying to learn to capture in VirtualDub, work out the bugs, work to pay bills, spend time with my wife, fix my crashed system, etc.

So, after I got my system working again, I downloaded tmpgenc plus trial and installed it. It said I had 14 days before expiration. Guess what. It gave me 1, so I never got to use it. I don't know if that's because the author program had expired, the free version had expired or some combination of both.

Looks like I'll wind up forking out money for tmpgenc plus even though I haven't used it. I'm using bbmpeg right now, but it is so slow. I can only hope tmpgenc is faster. There seem to be conflicting opinions in these forums on this and the test results listed here are for older versions as well.

I've been told it's because I have a shareware mpeg 2 codec.....but the only mpeg 2 proggys I've ever installed were the Elecard player and the limited one that comes with TMPGEnc (when all the problems started)

BTW, I LOVE TMPGEnc....but that little white box really ticks me off!

    Thanks.

  8. LMAO!!

I did a search on TMPGEnc + White box

    I found ZILCH!!!

SWEET! I can't wait to get home and try this.

Or better yet....is the only way to get PowerDvd or WinDVD for free to find a DVD drive that comes bundled with it?

    Maybe I'll try a demo.

    Thanks.

  9. Elecard is responsible for the white box, I have seen this posted on the forums several times before.

  10. natebetween - I know of no way to get either Power DVD or WinDVD for free (except as you said bundled with a drive, it seems that every DVD-ROM drive, even mail order OEM, come with one of these programs). However there are several free DVD Player that come with MPEG2 codecs. I like:

    http://www.maximusdvd.com/

There's a link to a free MPEG2 codec at the site as well

  11. Just an update for those of you that keep track.

I finally deleted that POS Elecard!

I tried downloading the codec at Maximus and it did NOTHING. I pushed install and it just sat there. I tried to play MPEG-2 and Sasami and WMP failed to render. I DLed the codec again......nothing!!

I installed the trial version of PowerDVD and VIOLA......Mpeg-2 playability. AND NO WHITE BOXES!!

Now I've been told that when the package expires that I MAY still have mpeg-2 functionality.......I guess we'll just wait 2 weeks and see.....

    THANKS

    Have a beer........on me!!!!
