    I would like to be able to convert video stream from DVD player (S-Video output), Digital firewire stream from miniDV camcorder to MPEG. Is there a not so expensive and reliabe hardware solution to do this?

  2. 1) If your PC does not already have one buy a DVD-ROM. These can be found mailorder for $25 and at brick&motar stores for $50-80.

    2) Look to the left under DVD Rip. D/load either DVD Decrypter or smartripper. There are guides that will walk you through 'ripping' the DVD to your HD. Since teh DVD is digital media there is no need to capture it (digital -> analog -> digital).

    Once you have the DVD ripped to your DVD you can do a lot of things with it. There are guides to the left for that as well.

    USB Instant DVD (USB1.1 version) available from tigerdirect.com for $90. It works great. Don't update the software; leave it at v1.0. Requires PIII/466, 128MB RAM (I have PIII/466/192MB RAM). I split the mpeg files using MPEG/AVI Splitter ($20 shareware), and use Nero to burn everything.

    VCD/SVCD/DVD - all work great.
