Just a hunch: Try to open the video in Virtual Dub, then see if it will frameserve to TMPGEnc.

I'm taking a guess here, but it sounds like you might have had Premeire in the mix somewhere. If so, here's a snippet from a forum question over at DVDHelp.us that might help.

I have been using Ligos encoder and it generate too much artifacts on fast moving objects, so someone recommended the other built in encoder for Adobe, but that also generated too many artifacts. So I downloaded the TMPGEnc, but when I tried to convert my AVI files that were generated from Adobe 6.5 (Microsoft AVI export setting) TMPGEnc throws up an error saying that the file is either "can't open or is unsupported". Can anyone help? The AVI files are my cousin's wedding video, so I am trying to give her the best quality possilbe. I even try to use DVDit PE to do the encoding, it did get ride of the artifacts but the overall picture got fuzzy. This is my first time trying to burn a DVD, so I am very new at this.
Your first problem is because of Adobe. It likes to do things its own way, and "doesn't play well with others."
You'll need to grab the Premiere plugin from the (DVDHelp.us) download area (It's in the Addon section) which will allow you to properly work with TMPGEnc. See the screenshot (on the download page) as well, as it should be helpful.
    Hope this helps!

decompress it 1st (i can send ya a decompressor small file)

then in vdub simply strip thae wav file
