  1. The tapes are quite old and there are some creases with the tapes. So when I capture them, these are also captured into the mpeg file. When I demux the mpeg file, the duration of the video is correct, but the duration of the audio is always a bit longer, so when I mux the files together, there is always desync. How can I make sure the mpeg file is perfect before I do anything to it?
I don't think I can improve the tapes.

I don't think the creases in the tape should be causing your sync issues - it sounds like they are being caused by the demuxing process or the encoder somehow.

what tools are you using, and what is the process? what file types and codecs are you capturing with?

try using TMPGenc to demux - I use it for most mpeg work, and have had no problems with it.

if you are going to dvd, you might try leaving them muxed and using them, or letting the authoring prog de and remux them.

what is your final output format, and what are you using to get there? also, how are you capturing, in what format, with what software, and is the initial capture in sync before you start demuxing?

  5. I am using Creative Moviemaker to create DVD. As the mpeg file captured by the Moviemaker is not standard, I have to do something about it. The original file captured is always synched, but when I try to manipulate it, like re-encoding or cutting and joining, it is quite likely it would become desynched.

Actually I tried TMPGenc to demux it, but desync occurs at the same point with same degree as I use mpeg2vcr. So my conclusion is that the original file has some problems.
