  4. I am also from Australia, and I found this drive for sale on an internet store for under $400 Australian dollars. I was very sceptical and did a search on google of the model number. It came up within the link below.

    http://www.dvdplusrw.org/pc/overview_next_gen.html

I found the drive listed above, so it was a genuine drive made by MSI.
I proceeded to buy it from the store in Australia, but they made it clear to me before purchase, that because the drive is so new, it is unlikely to be supported by most burning software on the market.
They were right, the software I tried using did not detect the drive on my system. The following is a list of software that I tried using to burn DVD movie or Data. There may be other software floating around that I have not tried yet that may or may not work with this drive.

    Stompinc BackUPMyPC- Drive detected.Works
    Pinnacle Instant Copy- Drive detected.Works
    DVD Decryptor- Drive detected.Works
    DVD Shrink- Drive detected.Works
EZ CD Creator- Drive not detected. Not Working
    Nero- Drive not detected.Not working
B's Recorder Gold 5. Drive not detected. Not working

I have primarily used dvd shrink and Instant Copy to make 27 backups of movies.Used Verbatim media. All movies burned great. No coasters.Play on both my computer and Pioneer DV525 DVD player.

  5. I have also found the exact same drive which has been rebadged as an Accesstek brand, but the drive is exactly the same model ie DD0203

    can be found here http://www.accesstek.com.tw

Has all the specs for this drive.

Just more info on my previous post, all the dvd movies I copied were burned with +R and -R Verbatim media. Also tried -RW and +RW media and works fine in both computer dvd rom and set top dvd player.
Seems to be a very stable and reliable multi format burner.Only downside is very limited burning software supports this drive(probably because it is too new)
Will be great when drive support for more commercial burning software is added.

  8. In reply to poisons question. No I do not have the latest patch for Nero. I only tried this burner with an old version (about 10 months old) of Nero that I have on CD.I suppose it should work with Nero if you update to the latest Nero version. I have not bothered updating Nero as I do not use it. I only bought the burner to back up my DVD movie collection using Instant Copy, and I must say it does a terrific job at that.
For the price of a single format burner, you get a multi format burner that burns flawlessly.

thanks for your help. my distributor doesnt have either the msi or sony instock atm so i will have to wait.

so unless the sony dru-510a comes down in price i will most probably get the msi

i have the latest nero. so will wait and see if that supports the msi if i get one

  14. Just patched Nero to the latest update and the MSI 8404 burner worked.
Also works with the latest RecordNow and EZ CD Creator software, BUT only after you patch to the latest updates.
I have now copied a total of 43 DVD Movies using DVD Shrink and Instant Copy, and so far no coasters, and the movies play great on my Pioneer dvd player. Cannot tell the difference from original. This is the best value dual format burner on the market.

He doesn't know. I own every Sony DVD Burner produced and have them in quantity. I have four Sony 500AU's in a duplicator. I also have three of Sony's 500AX in 3 different computers. They get worked hard each day and perform flawless work each burn. And I still have a Sony 120A with over 700 burns to its credit. System setup is crucial to things working correctly.

from what i have read the pioneer A06 is going to be the same specs as the dru-500a, pioneer say that there isnt and 4x +r/rw media out yet and they dont know when it will be. so they are sticking to the 2.4x +r/rw.

so the msi is recognised then with the new software. there isnt anything listed on the nero website about the msi model that is for sale in aust.

how is the msi dvd burner going? I have ordered one from altech but they dont have any stock. I emailed msi and they told me the drive wouldnt be in australia for another 2 weeks. that is why there is no info on their web site yet.

what brands of blank dvds have you tried and what was the success?

    thanks
