  1. Everytime we make a backup, we must go from DVD-9 to DVD-5.

Are there any plans to make a DVD-9 for home authoring purposes.

I know that DVD-9s are pressed and cannot be burned. But wouldn't it be possible to press blanks and then have the burning laser do the same thing as the reader laser when the layer switches.

This would make life a LOT easier.

    Again...just a thought...

  3. Hey man,

    That'd be amazing.

    Only thing is:

I will have to get a new DVD player due to the new laser

    and

    When will this become mainstream?

    Thanks

  4. Define mainstream? Blu-ray is out in Japan. I don't consider DVDR to be mainstream. Available, yes. Fairly low cost, yes. But not main stream. Remember there are still a LOT of people/homes out there that do not own DVD players.

As with all new technology it's going to take some time before the consumer decides if they want it.

I think some one once said they burned 2 discs separetely and then super glued them together. Voila....dual layered disc.

Anyone stupid enough to try this I can not held responsible for damage that will incurr on any hardware.

Yes, factory-made DVDs are "pressed" not burned.

There will never, IMHO, be a burnable double-layer because the laser would destroy the top layer to get at the bottom layer.

Double-sided is a different question; all that takes is a laser-opaque layer between the laser-affected chemical layers.
