I bought some cheap DVD-Rs, according to the label the max burning speed is 1x, but Nero Express doesn't allow lower than 2x. I burned at this speed and it seems to work. However my question is: Can doing this repeatedly damage the burner?

I'm not a tech wizard in regards to the burner itseld, but I would think that the only issue you would have is that either the drive would not recognize the blank or give you an invalid media message(which obviously you are not getting) or since the discs are not rater for above 1X you may notice that the burn has errors or doesn't play correctly.

wont ruin the player...however if you select max speed the drive will auto rate the speed of the disks...if they burn at 2X then they are 2x verified with that drives firmware...how ever even if thier 2x verified it does not mean the quality is there so you may get more pauses, skips, slowdows etc. when playing them back on a home dvd player...if they play at all. just remeber to turn off the drive when smoke starts coming out of it :P

I wouldn't worry about it. I bought a bulk pack from PC Club, they were supposed to be 1x, but they all burned at 2x. A quick check of the disk discovered that they were apparently Sony 2x disks that someone snuck into the bulk pack!!! 8) 8)
