Ps2 on vcd?

I was just wondering if it is possible to play ps2 games on a vcds on a vcd player because I know you can't play vcd's on a ps2

A PS2 can play VCD and u can't use anything but a PS2 (with the expection being an Emu on a computer with a DVD-rom) to play PS2 games

Correction

PS2 can play VCD's but the stuff you need for it I'm not sure if it's legal or not. The process requires a mod chip, gameshark and a nice tutorial you might find on the internet. I havn't tried it myself, there is no way in hell I'll open my sweet PS2 and fiddle with it inside. It's kinda stupid anyway because you have to use a swap method so even if I wanted to play VCD's on my PS2, I would still think it's crap. Just get some DVD player that supports VCD's, I would definitely recommend that.

and like I said, it doesnt play VCDs OUT OF THE BOX, happy now..and even with all the supposed mods, there is still no guarantee it will work...sooo no it does not play VCDs

The ps2 does not play vcds AT ALL. There is absolutely NO way you can modify a ps2 to play vcds. The console has no mpeg1 decoder at all and there is nothing that a mod chip or gameshark can do about that. Please people this gets asked about 10 times a week just do a search. But kdiddy was absolutely correct the first time, the ps2 does NOT play vcds at all.

You can play VCD's on ps2 BECAUSE, What about ps1, you can play VCD's on that and that doesnt have a Mpeg-1 card!!!!!!
Which means that you can buy Add-ons for the ps2.

The PS2 does not play VCDs out of the box. There are also no VCD adapters for it at this point.

The ps2 does not play vcds long
it plays about 5 minutes of a svcd then it just stops playing i've been working on getting it to work for a while but for now its pointless until some more ps2 developers get it to work

Dazzle where do you think the mpeg1 decoding software came from for the ps1 that allowed it to play vcds? From the hardware adapter of course. The ps1 and ps2 are alot more different than you think. Its illogical to assume that just because a hardware adapter exists for the first console that one exists for the second. Incidentally, I can ASSURE you that there is no hardware adapter yet that allows vcd playback on the ps2.

If u guys want to try it out I can get you a tutorial but beware only 20 minutes of a svcd play and after that it just goes back to the loading screen
and yes you do need a modchip a gameshark or a gameshark and a knife to do the swap trick

Hey for what it's worth - get the Wal-mart special: Apex 500W - you'll hear mixed reviews about it, but i went and spent a measly $98 bucks on it and it plays DVD,VCD,SVCD,and MP3 cds! Jeez - I think just about the only thing it DOESN'T play is Playstation games! (Though I haven't yet tried this to confirm )

Chances are that the mpeg-2 hardware can play mpg-1s as well but as for wanting a ps2 for vcds(or dvds)forget it..it isn't worth it.You can get a good dvd player and a dreamcast and accessories for less than the price of a ps2 plus the dc can play vcds anyway(not very well tho).

I must agree with bloodthirst, PS1 requires a seperate mpeg1 movie card for VCD, the Dreamcast is powerful enough to use software for VCD playback.
Now PS2 (the most overrated console in history!) should be powerful enough to use software for VCD playback, its reading the media thats the problem. I myself have been so unimpressed with the PS2 that I will not buy one so I don't know wheather it will play music CDR's. If it can then someone needs to write a VCD playback program, which would be a vast undertaking, so PS2 cannot play VCD!
So buy a stand alone DVD player with VCD support. Use the PS2 as a console because DVD playback on PS2 is shit!!

The PS2 plays actualy boughten vcds. I have a few from japan and I played them on my friends the whole movie with no problem. The problem is that it wont read cd-r. The format is playable but not the media.

the standard US out-of-the-box ps2 will absolutely not play a vcd by itself
but, there IS a ps2 playing vcd without any mods or the like, and thats the very first series of japanese ps2 produced
i dont know if it recognises svcd's, allthough since there is a mpeg2 decoder chip it IS possible to play them
i dont know of any mod that will play vcd, and im not sure if the mpeg2 decoder chip can decode them, but it MIGHT...
the ps2 is surely fast enough to play a vcd by software, but at the moment there is no such software available

the ps1 fmv's wherent mpeg1, but actually a weird variation of MJPEG
you can make your own ps1 compatible mjpegs using special software, and these will play on ps1 aswell as ps2 (but stil requires a standard modchip)
allthough the quality will be sub-vcd and you can only fit about 20 minutes on a cd, but its actually quite ok...
the out-of-the-box ps2 wont read CDR usually (there are exceptions), but it is possible to recalibrate the ps2 lens so that it will (anyway, offering ps2 isos on the net wouldt make much sence otherways
there are no working ps2 emulators at the moment, there are a few running projects, but all of them are still FAR away from playing commercial games...
i dont think i really have to comment the "ps2 games on vcd" question, its just a little TO silly...
there is indeed a ps1 modchip that will allow it to play vcd's, but that one actually CONTAINS the mpeg1 decoder
there also is a ps1 software mpeg1 player in development, but at the moment it will only decode a single frame, and it wont ever be fast enough to actually WATCH anything on it, since the ps1 is far to slow for that at the moment
oh, for all the vcd / svcd confusion, that something plays svcd doesnt mean that it plays vcd, and vice versa, since vcd is MPEG1, and svcd is MPEG2, and these are absolutely incompatible...

You can play a vcd on ps2,but you must convert to mpeg then to avi then convert to psx file but games you need a mod chip.The progams to do this are out on the web,but you must read,understand,have a raw burner,good burner software and time.It is alot of work and time to do this when you can use a dvd player with less work involve but if you like to play and experiment it can be done.

As already stated, because they ARENT mpeg1 videos. There is no mpeg1 decoding software in either the psx nor the PS2 so therefore they cannot play vcd without some form of modification. At this point in time there is NO modification which can be done to the PS2 to make it play vcds if it doesnt already.

@shochan and Topy44: I don't mean to accuse anyone of anything but I am extremely skeptical about this being true. shochan, the problem with vcds not playing has nothing to do with media. All versions of PS2 can easily read cdr with a mod chip or other modification. In fact the Japanese PS2 doesnt even require any modification to boot cdrs, all you have to do is use the utility disk as a swap disk. But if the Japanese PS2 did in fact play vcds why doesnt the box mention this? It would surely be a strong selling point in Japan. The original Japanese psx did play vcds and it was written in big letters across the box. I can't think of any reason that Sony would spend extra time and money on a hidden feature that wouldnt earn them any extra sales.

The main reason I am so skeptical is that I have tried it. A good friend of mine, who also happens to be insanely rich, bought the Japanese PS2 before it even hit the shelves. It was certainly the first series of the PS2 released. Neither original nor copied vcds played at all.

Sony experimented with vcd playback on the original psx. Besides lessening the life of the laser it did not seem to increase sales at all. Vcd capabilites were quickly removed. I cannot think of any reason why Sony would make the same mistake twice.

The PS2, unlike the PS1, does have an onboard MPEG-2 decoder which should be backward compatible with MPEG-1. Thus, it should be relatively trivial to program the PS2 to play back VCDs (though no one seems to have done this -- why?). In any case, the PS2 has enough computing power to decode VCD standard MPEG-1 anyway even without a hardware decoder. If only someone would create the add-on...

The PSX does not have a hardware MPEG-1 decoder and nor does it have enough computing power to decode VCD standard MPEG-1 in real-time. This is why a hardware adapater is required. The FMV clips on the PSX are in a form of MJPEG video and the PSX is able to play this because it actually contains a MJPEG decoder chip on board.
