  1. In order to run TMPGENC faster using my current P4,
should I get more RAM , or is it RAM dependent ?

Currently, I have 256M installed but after running WINXP,
the physical RAM availiable is only around 80 to 90M.

What is the good mix of RAM and money spent?

    Thanks

I don't know too much about TMPGEnc's memory usage patterns, however I can observe that at the moment I'm running an encode on about 100 minutes of half-D1 video (352x480) and the TMPGEnc process is currently using about 240MB of RAM. So it might not hurt to add another 256MB if it's a cheap upgrade for you.

Can you use your mpeg-2 real time encoder to encode files from your hard disk or do they have to come in to the card via a digicam or DV cam? I would love a real time encoder to do conversion but don't know if it is possible.
No...its just from the input...although I just did a quick test and played video out from my Powerbook through a DSR11 DV deck, and Svideo into my MVR1000 and it worked fine. So if you have another computer and an extra DV camera laying around ...I suppose you could do a pseudo realtime encoder from existing files.

  4. My dualie runs tmpge with both cpu's pegged at 100% with no filters enabled. You can expect a average of a 35% increase in encode time. But whats great about a dual is you can rip and burn a dvd while encoding.

  5. Scroll down to see the Test Systems.
Continue 2 pages later (page 5) and scroll down see the TMPGEnc benchmark.
2.0ghz Intel Xeons vs 2000+ AMD MPs

Here and here is another benchmark although the cpus are different.
2.4ghz Intel Xeons vs 2200+ AMD MPs

BTW this thread is really making me want to buy those parts i posted above.
Going to be a few months before I have that kind of money, but worth it. I multitask a lot as well.

    Ripper,
How can you peg a dual CPU machine, 100%, during an encode, and a line later say that you can encode and rip and burn at the same time. Something has got to slow down, to get the "200"% (Duallies) to rip and burn while encoding. Your encoding is either not any kind of a priority, or everything slows to a crawl. Which is it?
Sounds kinda like some of the reports that say they are encoding faster than they can rip, cause they oc'd a gigahertz or two.

  7. What i do is,first start smartrip, then start the dvd burn, then the encode.Even though tmpge is using 100% i can still multitask.
