  1. has anyone tried creating an svcd from a backup dvd-r that was run through DTOX? Just wondering if the quality and file sizes would be the same (or nearly the same) as the original?

I have. It works quite well. Yes same quality (for the most part) since you are going to have to decrease the k/sec when you reencode down to SVCD setting. I have only done it on movie only copy though, and had to do it the hard way.

Forty-Two didnt work since it didnt like the dvd-r movie only copy.

SO i had to demux the .vob, reencode the mpeg2 convert audio to .mp2 at 128k/sec with 44khz remux and author as svcd, but yea it works and looks pretty decent

but if you are goign to do all this, why not just use the DVD instead of the dvd-r, you will probably get better results.

  3. i was mainly concerned with whether or not the file sizes would be smaller ripping from the dvd-r. it seems that the file size outputted from forty-two goes along with the size of the movie it pulls of the disc (more so than the length of the movie). so...with a disc the has been run through DTOX obviously having a smaller file size than the original, it would be my guess that the svcd files would be smaller than running it off the original disc.

i haven't done this and don't even know if i plan to...i was just curious.

my files size was that of standard SVCD.
I didnt end up using forty two since it didnt accept the dvd-r.

I just demuzed each of the .vob files, converted the .m2v to 2500k/sec and remuxed the audio after converting from .ac3 to .mp2

it was standard SVCD file size.
    hope that fills your curiosity
