I have switched to 2pass method using TMPGEnc at higher bit rates, and now I am getting MPEG1 files that when burned on a CD to play in a DVD player the sound is out of synch or worse sounds like some kind of computer synthesized music with reverbs. The video quality of the VHS tapes is not very good.

The file when played on my PC has no problems.

How can I tell when the files are going to be like this when burned on a VCD so that I don't keep burning coasters?

Is something wrong with my DVD player or am I doing something wrong with the compression from AVI to MPEG1?

  2. ive never really tried using vbr when i convert any video files to MPEG1..

i use the default tmpgenc template which is in CBR and at 1150 kbps.. i maybe wrong but i presume your dvd player doesnt or is a little picky when it comes to changing standards like u just did...

    hope this helps..

CBR is the only compliant DVD or VCD spec for MPEG1.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

How high is your max setting? I use 2-pass for VCD but I can't set my max higher than 1150 or my player craps out. Use an RW to test your player at different rates, your probably exceeding it's limit.

    ZippyP,

with your 2-pass VBR, do you set both the nominal and the max bitrates to the same 1150?

and is the quality that much better?

    thanks!
