  1. I've read about using the miniDV camcorder pass-thru feature to convert analog video to digital. Does this eliminate the video/audio synch problems that can occur with capture cards?

(I've captured about 20 hours already using a capture card with varying success. May be time to get that new camcorder.)

I have been using a sony DCRTRV340 D8 camcorder as a passthrough now for about 8 months. In this time I have had absolutely no problems with sync. I use Ulead VS5 which came with my firewire card, which is ok. Tried DVIO the other night, people have been recommending it. It started up , lost 20 frame in the first 5 seconds so I quickly stopped. Might need a little fine tuning on my part I think

There will be no loss of sync passing thru a CAMCORDER

only reason for loss of SYNC..Rips, Tears or Droputs in Source material.

    Otherwise..
IF YOU HAVE A REGULAR MONITOR with SOUND connected to the output of the DECK while you pass throught the cam corder
THE image on the MONITOR will appear out of SYNC during the
capture period, but will be in SYNC later

THAT is, any non-I-LINK or non-firewire output will appear out of sync temporarilily with the IEE1394 port

  5. Great. Thanks for the replies. Looks like they span most of the English speaking world: NYC, Ireland, Australia. I wonder, will French be in synch?(j/k).

  6. Yes you can have sync issues using DV camcorder pass-thru. I have only had sync issues when my source had a drop/glitch in it. This has also happened with my ADVC-100 and DAC-100. Generally the audio would be ahead of the picture
